Hi Iskov,

Your Score Goal is relatively modest (and if a 550 is enough to get you into your first-choice Program, then it's even more modest), so you might be able to study however you choose and hit your Goal. Since you've been studying for just 1 week, you should not expect to have mastered any part of the Exam just yet - and we don't know what additional study materials you might end up needing yet. As such, I suggest that you study how you like for the next 2-3 weeks, then take a new, FULL-LENGTH CAT (with the Essay and IR sections). Once you have that Score, you should report back here and we can assess how well your studies are going (and what adjustments, if any, you should make).

Hi Iskov,

Many Test Takers are unhappy with their initial practice scores, but you really shouldn't be. It's just a measure of your skills right now - and you're going to work to improve all of those skills in the coming months. A June Test Date gives you plenty of time to study and improve - which is good. That having been said, Raising a 390 to a 600+ will likely take at least another 3 months of consistent, guided study - and you'll have to make significant improvements to how you handle BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections.

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

1) How long have you studied?
I have studied for little over a week. I am currently doing my undergraduate writing my bachelor thesis in the last semester.
2) What study materials have you used so far?
I already acquired the three OG books. Furthermore I have signed up for Magoosh since those were the ones I came across first and they seemed credible. I am, however, currently trying my way to see what works for me and might be willing to move to other guides if that would improve my end result.
3) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
I am planning to take the GMAT end of June.
4) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
I have already applied to a business school in Europe and am expecting a result from an interview I was at. We have agreed on an "exemption" from showing a GMAT score at the time that I sumbitted my application. But as mentioned they have a requirement of about 600. I believe 550+ should do it.
5) What Schools are you planning to apply to?
I have a applied for Koc University in Istanbul. They are a member of CEMS double-degree.

Hi iskov,

3 months is good enough time to improve your score. It's a good thing you have taken a GMAT mock. You now know your weaknesses and can work on them. If you are willing to study dedicatedly for that period, you are sure to achieve your goal. If you are willing, there are some great GMAT prep companies that can help you with your preparation.

In order to make an informed decision I would highly encourage you to go to their websites and try on their free trial and decide for yourself which one do you like better. You try out free access to EmpowerGMAT, Magoosh and Optimus Prep as they have great reviews on GMATCLUB.

Also for verbal, I would highly encourage you to consider e-gmat verbal online or the e-gmat verbal live course. They are both amazing courses especially designed for non-natives. They offer almost 25% of their courses for free so you can try out their free trial to decide which one you want to go for. Plus the e-gmat Scholaranium which is included in both the courses is one of the best verbal practice tools in the market.

You can also try out the MGMAT guides they are phenomenal and cover the entire syllabus really well. Just by going through these guides and solving the OG will help you reach 600+. I must add that if you are particularly looking to discover and improve on your weak areas in quant; a subscription to GMATCLUB tests is the best way to do that. They are indeed phenomenal and will not only pinpoint your weak areas but also help you improve on them. Further taking multiple mocks might help. Apart from the GMATPREP, Manhattan GMAT tests and Veritas Prep Tests in my experience have a good verbal and Quant section and will certainly help you point out and improve your weak areas.

Further another advantage of taking many mocks is to build up your stamina. Apart from the GMATPREP tests, taking practise tests of any major GMATPREP company ought to do that.

Lastly I would also encourage you to purchase the latest version of OG and the verbal review for some great additional practice. Here is a link that will help you with your decision.

Hope this helps. All the best.

Hi Rohan2345,

Thank you very much for you thorough advice, it is much appriciated! I will be taking a closer look at all of it. There is a ton of material out there, and it's about finding what is suitable for me. I do agree that taking numerous mock exams will enhance my chances, so I will be looking for options to do that.

Initially I have had the greatest focus on the Quant part of the GMAT, however, I had similar "poor" results in the Verbal part. I guess I will have to keep a balance between the two.

Yet again thank you for your advice.

Hi RichC,

That sounds very reasonable. You will be hearing from me in 3 weeks.
