Basic DescriptionWord Power Made Easy is a 500-plus page book designed to strengthen your vocabulary and general understanding of words. Vocabulary lessons are divided into 25 chapters. There are also ten in-between chapters, called “brief intermissions,” which discuss grammar, spelling and proper usage of words. An appendix contains a list of phobias. The paperback version can be purchased for USD $7.59 on Amazon or USD $7.99 (list price) at bookstores.
Pros1. Vocabulary – This book covers hundreds of words, all of which are comprehensively defined and their etymology discussed.
2. Etymology – Familiarity with root words can help in the learning process as well as figuring out the meaning of new words.
3. Organization - Words are grouped according to various themes, which helps in memorization.
4. Forced Participation – The author provides various exercises and drills throughout the book. Activities include pronunciation, matching, and fill-in-the blank. This approach forces one to adopt an active mindset, which helps to improve absorption of the material.
5. Affordability – The price is quite cheap! Be careful with used versions, however, as those might already have extensive writing and notes.
Cons1. Not GRE-specific – This book is not specifically catered to the GRE and by itself will insufficiently prepare you for the test. You will also learn obscure words not tested on the GRE (examples include callipygian and Triskaidekaphobia). Nearly all of the words found in the appendix will not appear on the GRE.
2. Size – The book’s small size is inconvenient when completing the many written exercises. Fortunately, the book can withstand a fair bit of bending.
Closing RemarksWord Power Made Easy will definitely increase your vocabulary. The author’s writing style is user-friendly and the many exercises keep you fully engaged. With that said, the book does require a fair amount of time and effort to complete, so timing can be an issue for test purposes. If you plan to read this book, allow enough time to finish it prior to your actual GRE studies.
Word Power Made Easy does not specifically target GRE vocabulary (though there is some overlap) and solely relying on this book could lead to trouble on test day. Use this resource, instead, as a compliment or warm-up to your GRE preparation.
