Hi stevenfuqua,
I want to build a career in Healthcare, mostly (Healthcare Management consulting). I have 3 year exp in Healthcare Technology field and have some idea about some new developments in this field.
I plan to apply to Duke this year and was wondering if you could tell me how Duke MBA would help me build a career in this sector?
Thanks
This is a very broad question
Duke has many opportunities for health care consulting. I'd say that consulting and pharma/biotech are what most HSM students recruit for. You can find the last few years of employment data here.
https://www.fuqua.duke.edu/mba_recruitin ... tatistics/. Go through the list and see if you can find firms that you'd like to work for. Having these firms come on campus and recruit offers exceptional networking opportunities, especially important as consulting is particularly network heavy. Fuqua also has tons of alums at these firms, and it's great to have that established presence. You can read my classmate's blog about his experience in consulting.
https://reachingthethirties.wordpress.co ... ists-time/During our HSM seminar (required class in first year) and other events, we regularly have consultants come in and speak. We've had healthcare consultants from McKinsey, BCG's, ZS Associates (and more) talk about their careers and their recent projects. While I'm interested in biotech/pharma, I still attended so I could learn more about the industry. I would consider them fantastic networking events for your career goals.
Fuqua Client Consulting Practicum (FCCP) is a 6 month consulting project that you can do as early as fall in the first year. You can pick a project to work on (both local and global) and help a real company solve a real problem. It is a great experience and gives you hands on consulting experience that will help you during your internship and full time interviews.
Healthcare is a very complex industry with multiple stakeholders. Consultants are hired to solve these complex problems. Therefore, having a solid understanding of the industry and having the opportunity to do experiential projects to build real-world skills through the dedicated HSM program will help you transition into healthcare consulting.
This is a very general overview and I'm likely missing a lot of details. Go through Fuqua's HSM website (
https://www.fuqua.duke.edu/programs/duke ... sm_daytime) and I'd be happy to answer any specific questions that you (or anyone else) may have.
