A and B are out because the opening modifier is incorrectly modifying the night sky
C is incorrect , In C stars are spotting the night sky
In D , burnt is in incorrect , a chicken on stove might get "burnt" , the usual past tense of burn is "burned"

(A) Some of them burned out eons ago, the night sky is spotted with thousands of stars. (Stars were burned not the sky)

(B) Burned out eons ago, the night sky is spotted with many thousands of stars.(not clear that the stars were burned out)

(C) Thousands of stars, some of them burned out eons ago, are spotting the night sky. (Present continous is runing the present tense type structure)

(D) The night sky is spotted with thousands of stars, some of which are burnt out eons ago. (contender)

(E) The night sky is spotted with thousands of stars, some of them burned out eons ago (contender)

Option E is clear winner because Some of which are burnt out suggests some are still visible though they burnt out eons ago.sounds absurd right?

MANHATTAN REVIEW OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:



This question involves dangling modifiers. What burned out eons ago? Thousands of stars did. ‘Thousands of stars’ and not ‘the night sky’ must therefore come after the comma. Eliminate A and B. C has an incorrect tense. It should be ‘spot’ and not ‘are spotting’. Choice D also has a mistake in tense. The stars are not burnt out at present, they burned out a long time ago. Choice E is the correct answer.
