I have read a few posts about taking supplementary courses (financial accounting, econ, etc) and was wondering if there is a big difference as to where it is taken at, i.e. community college vs. UC extension classes, etc -- if I can take the community college for $90 as opposed to the $450 at extension...that would be that many more drinks I can buy for myself ;)

My quant is good, BS is in Mechanical Engineering (GPA 3.6) but unfortunatley, my GMAT (45Q, 31V) isn't all that great and so I wanted to supplement my overall candidancy by taking some business courses. I am not going to apply until fall 09' so I am thinking about retaking the GMAT (unfortunately..) but, suppose I do not reach that 700 mark, I want to be able to compensate with something else. I am focusing on work and finding ways to gain more responsibility, but we are currently in the process of merging with another consulting company so things are a little slow right now.

I am 25, Female/asian.... any advice will be appreciated! thanks

You are far better off nailing the GMAT. You have a solid GPA in a difficult major...the GMAT is going to be a much bigger sticking point. Its fairly routine for WL people to basically be hinted to up there GMAT.

Actually, it would be a good statistic to get :-

Average/median GMAT of acceptances vs Average/Median GMAt of Waitlisted people. To discern if there is any correlation.

OK, not scientifit, but using admissions 411 for Kellogg :-

Mean Average GMAT for Admitted students - 731
Median :- 740

Mean Average GMAT for Dinged students - 714
Median :- 710


Mean Average GMAT for WaitListed students - 735
Median :- 750

I can't really see any point in taking additional classes. You have a great GPA in a tough major. There's nothing you can accomplish on this front through community college or extension courses; they just don't carry that much weight. Even if you get straight A's in a host of business related courses, it won't help because business schools know that it's not all that challenging to do so (I know, I took some).

Focus on the GMAT. That will be more effective use of your time and money.

Toga here is an interesting idea on the GMAT and its roll. Done for Kellogg since they give breakdowns for ranges.

That is an extremely interesting thread from start to finish. Valid point by mNeo that, if you can throw out 50% of the apps as junk, it can give you a false sense of security...
