A) That El Salvador is pervaded by violence and stark terror was reported by Joan Didion in a disturbing series of articles recorded ---distorts the meaning of the sentence. this implies that "the series recorded her impression...." which is illogical

B) That violence and stark terror pervade El Salvador was reported by Joan Didion in a disturbing series of articles recording ----- Correct.

C) Violence and stark terror pervade El Salvador, and were reported by Joan Didion in a disturbing series of articles recorded----- Same error as A. structure is awkward.

D) Violence and stark terror pervade El Salvador, which was reported by Joan Didion in a disturbing series of articles recording---------Incorrect use of "which" refering to El Salvador

E) El Salvador is pervaded by violence and stark terror, and it was reported by Joan Didion in a disturbing series of articles recording-----"it" here refers to "violence and terror" that is incorrect

Quote:
A) That El Salvador is pervaded by violence and stark terror was reported by Joan Didion in a disturbing series of articles recorded
C) Violence and stark terror pervade El Salvador, and were reported by Joan Didion in a disturbing series of articles recorded

We need the -ing modifier here => 'recorded' is incorrect, so we can safely eliminate A & C.

Quote:
D) Violence and stark terror pervade El Salvador, which was reported by Joan Didion in a disturbing series of articles recording

El Salvador was not reported by Joan, so this option is Incorrect. OUT!

Quote:
E) El Salvador is pervaded by violence and stark terror, and it was reported by Joan Didion in a disturbing series of articles recording

What did Joan Didion report? 'It' has an ambiguous antecedent. So E is OUT!

Quote:
B) That violence and stark terror pervade El Salvador was reported by Joan Didion in a disturbing series of articles recording

Only remaining option, and the correct answer.

Hope this helps!

I'm not following the above explanations both "recorded" and "recording" are participial phrases and would modify nearest noun "articles", the only reason i would prefer B is because use of passive voice in A.

A) That El Salvador is pervaded by violence and stark terror was reported by Joan Didion in a disturbing series of articles recorded
B) That violence and stark terror pervade El Salvador was reported by Joan Didion in a disturbing series of articles recording

Please correct me if i'm wrong.

I agree

recorded seems good.

Only tense issue could be the clue here.
