The annual profit or loss for the three divisions of Company T for the years 1991 through 1995 are summarized in the table shown, where losses are enclosed in parentheses. For which division and which three consecutive years shown was the division's profit or loss for the three-year period closest to $0 ?

Easy question, but be sure to take the profits and losses correctly


A. Division A for 1991–1993......\(1.1-3.4+1.9=3-3.4=0.4\)
B. Division A for 1992–1994......\(-3.4+1.9+2.0=3.9-3.4=0.5\)
C. Division B for 1991–1993......\(2.3-5.5+4.5=6.8-5.5=1.3\)
D. Division B for 1993–1995...... \(-4.5+3.9-2.9\) clearly more than 1
E. Division C for 1992–1994...... \(-6.6+5.3+1.1=6.4-6.6=-0.2\)

We are not looking for a positive or negative value..
It is like a modulus that is the closet distance from 0
-0.2 is closest

The below table may be referred in order to determine the profit or loss incurred by company T for three consecutive years.

It is found that division C has incurred the loss closest to zero in the period 1992-1994.

Let’s analyze the answer choices.

A. Division A for 1991–1993

Profit (or loss) = 1.1 - 3.4 + 1.9 = (0.4)

B. Division A for 1992–1994

Profit (or loss) = -3.4 + 1.9 + 2.0 = 0.5

C. Division B for 1991–1993

Profit (or loss) = -2.3 + 5.5 - 4.5 = (1.3)

D. Division B for 1993–1995

Profit (or loss) = -4.5 + 3.9 - 2.9 = (3.5)

E. Division C for 1992–1994

Profit (or loss) = -6.6 + 5.3 + 1.1 = (0.2)

Answer: E

Just to make it a little simple, took it in multiples of 10.

Option A : 11 - 34 + 19 = 4
Option B : -34 + 19 + 20 = 5
Option C : 23 − 55 + 45 = 13
Option D : −45 + 39 −29 = - 35
Option E : −66 + 53 + 11 = -2

Hence E

Quick solution:

A. 1.1+(-3.4)+1.9=3-3.4=-0.4
B. -3.4+1.9+2.0=-3.4+3.9=0.5 A is better
C. -2.3+5.5-4.5 A is better
D. -4.5+3.9-2.9 A is better
E. -6.6+5.3+1.1=-6.6+6.4=-0.2 E is better than A

Answer: E
