answer is 10.

assume ininngs = x

then total runs = 45*x

after the next innings

total innings = x+1

total runs = 40.5*(x+1)

now he got out for duck so total runs remain same
so
45*x = 40.5 *(x+1)

which gives x = 9

so the total including the last = 10

so sum of x matches before last match = 45x
and last match batsman got 0 runs
so
45x+0/ x+1 = 40.5
so x= 9
total matches played = 9+1 ; 10

We can let x = the number of innings he played before the latest inning and create the equation:

40.5 = 45x/(x + 1)

40.5x + 40.5 = 45x

40.5 = 4.5x

x = 9

Thus he played for 10 innings, including the one in which he was out for a duck.
