The rankings by News Agencies can be affected by donations/excellent treatment from colleges that wish to move up in rankings. This partly explains wild fluctuations in rankings on an yearly basis.

However in this case the UK embassy would not grant a favorable ranking to any school as they would want to attract the best talent to UK.


Although no ranking is perfect, I highly doubt that donations/excellent treatment by colleges affect the ranking of any of the colleges by publications such as US News, Business Week, Economist, etc. You can disagree with the methodology, inputs, and weighing of the inputs for each ranking but they are fairly transparent. The fluctuations are there, and yes, some are wild but most likely not for the reasons you are suggesting.
