What is the equation of a line that has a slope of −3 and that passes through the point (2, 1) ?

A. y = −3x + 1
B. y = −3x + 7
C. y = −3x + 11
D. y = 3x + 1
E. y = 3x + 5

Using slope-intercept form y = mx + b, we see that the slope m = −3, but we don’t know the value of b,the y-intercept. We can solve for b by using the point (2, 1), which gives us x = 2 and y = 1. Substituting, we have:
y = mx + b

1 = -3(2) + b

1 = -6 + b

7 = b

Thus:

y = -3x + 7

Answer: B
