Re: What is the tens place digit of a two-digit positive integer N? [#permalink]
B
Because it is asked for tens digit and hence the equation would be 29<N<40. Hence you would only have 3 in the tens place

Solution

Given:
• N is a two-digit positive integer

To find:
• The tens place digit of N

Analysing Statement 1
• As per the information given in Statement 1, 81 < \(N^2\) < 1600
    o As N is positive integer, we can write 9 < N < 40
    Or, 10 ≤ N ≤ 39
• So, the tens place digit of N can be either of 1, 2, and 3 – we are not getting a unique answer
• Hence, Statement 1 is not sufficient to answer

Analysing Statement 2
• As per the information given in Statement 2, 58 < 2*N < 80
    o Or, 29 < N < 40
    o Or, 30 ≤ N ≤ 39
• As N lies between 30 and 39 (both included), the tens place digit of N is 3
• Hence, Statement 2 is sufficient to answer

Hence, the correct answer is Option B.

But we are not getting definitive answer with statement 2 as well

Most probably you missed that the question is asking for the tens place digit, not the unit digit.
As per statement 2, we can say N can have one of the values between 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, and 39.
Whatever the value of N, the tens place digit is always 3 - therefore, we are getting a unique answer.
