Which of the following values of n when added to the list of numbers: [#permalink]
Which of the following values of n when added to the list of numbers: 8, 16, 18 and 22, would result in a new set of five numbers that would have the least possible of standard deviation?

For this question, we are looking for the value of n that gives the least possible standard deviation. This means that we are looking for a value for n that deviates the least from the mean. In this case, the mean of the set of 8,16,18 and 22 is (8+16+18+22)/4 = 16. So, the number that would cause the least possible standard deviation would be a number closest to the mean (a number that is the same is the mean would cause no change in standard deviation at all). In this case, the answer must be 16.

Answer is C

(A) -16

(B) 0

(C) 16

(D) 17

(E) 18
