Re: While price supports for dairy products will save jobs in the dairy in [#permalink]

The author's argument depends on which of the following premises ?

Premises: Save on the jobs by increasing price support for dairy products. High prices of dairy, more revenue for dairy products and less for other products, causing low revenue for other products. Any premise related to this line of thinking will suffice. THINK of this as EVALUATE question and it will be better to choose the choice.

(A) Most consumers would not prefer lower-priced dairy products to other lower-priced food items.- Irrelevant. Nothing of that sort mentioned or hinted implicitly.

(B) If dairy price supports are implemented, there will be an increase in the number of jobs in the dairy industry.- Argument talks of saving jobs.

(C) Consumers would spend more money on other types of food if there were no dairy price supports.- The negation of this statement can be a deciding factor hence it can serve as a premise. Also assumption can be derived from this statement. CORRECT.

(D) If price supports for other food products were implemented, sales of those products would decline.- INCORRECT.

(E) The quantity of dairy products sold will decrease if price supports are implemented.- This is opposed to the argument. Hence irrelevant.

Re: While price supports for dairy products will save jobs in the dairy in [#permalink]
I believe C is correct. The sentence "Because price supports will make dairy products more expensive, families will spend a greater portion of their food budgets on dairy products." suggests that price support for dairy products will cause people to spend a lesser portion of their food budgets on non-dairy products. This thus corresponds to C.

A --> Not relevant to the argument since there is no comparison of lower priced products.
B --> The passage states that price supports for dairy products will save jobs. It does not imply creation of jobs.
D --> Not relevant as the argument does not talk about price support for non dairy products.
E --> Incorrect as the passage is in fact arguing the exact opposite.

While price supports for dairy products will save jobs in the dairy industry, they will also endanger jobs in other food industries. Because price supports will make dairy products more expensive, families will spend a greater portion of their food budgets on dairy products.

Premise:
Price Support [PS] -> Save Jobs for dairy industry [J]
Price Support [PS] -> Endanger Jobs for food industry [~J]

Conclusion
Price Support [PS] ->Greater Budget on Dairy products [B]

If you reverse the conclusion:
[PS -> B ] becomes [~B -> ~PS]
This means "people will not spend much of their budget on dairy products if there is no price support for the dairy industry"

Answer choice C is reworded version of the statement above. People will spend money on other products if there is no price support for the dairy industry

IMO - C
Lets First Break down the argument :-
Conclusion - Price Support @ Dairy products = Save Jobs of DairyIndustry , But Endanger Jobs of Other food Industry.
Premise - Price Support = Make Dairy Products Expensive Hence Families will spend more on portion of food budget on dairy and less on other food items. Which will further endanger jobs in other food industries.

Now the Q is Assumption question - Hence the ans. is something that MUST BE TRUE for the argument to hold or when you negate it the argument reverses.
Pre thinking -
- Families will not increase their Current Budget
- Families don't have enough disposable income to fund their existing other foods need if Price of Dairy Products Increase, hence they have to forgo something.
- Families are currently spending money saved on dairy products on other types of foods.
- Somethin that Links > jobs to > Purchases of Products by consumers.

A- Counter Premise:- The Premise Says the Price will Increase - Hence this option is eliminated.
B- Out of Scope
C- Correct answer - Negate this the Conclusion reverses.
D- Price Support for other products is irrelevant and doesnt affect our argument
E- Again a Counter Premise - Hence Eliminate this option as well.

PS. my first attempt at posting something on this forum .. please Correct me if i have gone wrong somewhere

I am confused I had chosen option A.
If i negate ans C
consumers would spend less money on other types of food if there were dairy price supports.
it is same as the conclusion.......I dont think it is contradicting the conclusion.

If we negate A
most consumers would prefer lower priced dairy products to other lower priced food items........which implies they are left with the money to buy other food items. It seems to be contradicting the conclusion.
