Solution



Given:
    • 16 ounces of birdseed mix contains 10% sesame seed by weight

To find:
    • What amount of sesame seed must be added to produce a mix that is 20% sesame seed by weight

Approach and Working:
    • In the initial mix, amount of sesame seed = 16 * 0.1 = 1.6 ounces

Let us assume that the amount of sesame seed to be mixed is m ounces

Therefore, after mixing,
    • The amount of sesame seed = 1.6 + m
    • The total amount of mix = 16 + m

As the sesame seed accounts for 20% of the total mix amount, we can write
    • (16 + m) * 0.2 = 1.6 + m
    Or, 3.2 + 0.2m = 1.6 + m
    Or, 0.8m = 1.6
    Or, m = 2

Hence, the correct answer is option C.

(A) 1 ounce
(B) 1.6 ounces
(C) 2 ounces
(D) 2.4 ounces
(E) 4 ounces

In 16 Ounces, we have 10% sesame seed i.e. 1.6 ounce.
now let assume x ounce of sesame seed needed to make mixture that contains 20% of sesame seed
=> (1.6+x)/(16+x)= 1/5
=> by cross-multiplication, 8+5x= 16+x
=> 4x=8
=> x=2
C is the answer.

\(\frac{1.6}{16}=.10\)
\(\frac{1.6+x}{16+x}=.20\)
\(1.6+x = 3.2+.2x\)
\(.8x=1.6\)
\(x=2\)

Ans = C

let x=ounces of sesame seed to be added
1.6+x=.2(16+x)
x=2 ounces

let x ounces of sesame seed is added to get 20% mix

so BM1(birdseed mix) contains = 10% sesame seed

BM2 contains = 100% sesame seed

therefore 16/x = (10 - 20)/(20-100)

16/x = 1/8

x = 16/8

x = 2 ounces

this method takes much less time
this method is explained in Removal/Replacement in Mixtures

Question: 16 ounces of birdseed mix contains 10% sesame seed by weight. How much sesame seed must be added to produce a mix that is 20% sesame seed by weight?

Let x = sesame seed added

amount of sesame seed = 1.6 + m
amount of birdseed = 16 + m

1. 6 + m / 16 + m = 2/10

2(16 + x) = 16 + 10x
32 + 2x = 16 + 10x
16 = 8x
2 = x

Answer is C.
