I could live without it. I mean, I use it at the internship to hook it up to a bigger LCD monitor, and a full size keyboard but that's about it. I don't even use DVD drive for anything. So it depends on the user.

I just ordered a Thinkpad X201. I've had great experiences with Thinkpads in the past but just wanted a smaller one that is easy to carry for walking around in NYC. I got a stupendous deal on it (~850 shipped w/ tax) by following the directions below:

https://slickdeals.net/permadeal/35010/l ... win-7-prem

I went ahead and pulled the trigger on this deal. Added the base and upgraded the processor for a total cheaper than the Kellogg official laptop, but without the 3 year warranty and webcam.

I almost pulled the trigger as well, but backed out because I wanted a webcam for personal reasons. Its strange that the non-ultrabase option on lenovo's website has a webcam, but the ultrabase one doesn't offer it.

My summer internship employer issued Thinkpad X series laptop to me for the summer with the docking station and everything. This laptop is so light even with extra battery and easily runs 7 hours on battery. I highly recommend this laptop. You won't need to carry AC Adapter all day, plus it will lighten up your bookbag in school.

Did I mention that it looks really cool every time I stare at it? :-D i will trade in my Vaio TT for this thing any given day....

I'm about to pull the trigger on this. Do you have the X201 or the X201s? The reason I ask is that the X201s has been discontinued and had a higher resolution screen. Just wondering if you are ok with the WXGA screen if you have it.

Thanks!

Do these X201/X201s have the new ULV i5 (520UM if I recall correctly)?

No, the ULV i5 is not available yet, I believe.

People buying the X201s: do you have any concerns about it being too small? We'll obviously be spending a ton of time on these things. I'm worried that I'll want more screen real estate.

Any feedback from current and former students would be helpful as well.

Thanks in advance. :)

I'll be using mine with an external monitor/keyboard/mouse at home, so I'm not too worried.

Thank god for this thread! My 512mb RAM isn't holding up very well, and I needed a list of good like this. Hardest part is deciding.. seems like you can't go wrong, really. Gunna try the Thinkpad.

Worst case scenario, just buy or bring an external monitor. There is a VGA port. That would satisfy your small screen issue, balanced with superb battery life and weight factors.

This might be an attractive alternative if a ULV iX processor is necessary: https://www.gottabemobile.com/2010/06/09 ... eapad-u160

Should we update what we have so far?

I'll try to make a summary:

Asus UL30A-X5/UL30VT (13.3")
Pro:
Cheaper $600/700
Light 3.74 lbs
12 hours battery life

Cons:
No Disk Drive
Processor slightly slower than competitors

Lenovo x201 (12.1"):
Pros:
Nearly unbreakable - Lenovo
Solid specs - i5 Core
3.1 lbs

Cons:
No disk drive
Slightly more expensive even with deals (800-1000)
smaller screen

Lenovo T401s (14")
Pros:
Nearly unbreakable - Lenovo
Solid specs - i5 Core
3.9 lbs
Disk Drive
full 14" screen

Cons:
Expensive 1100+

Sony Y series
Pros:
Sony Style
Light without extended battery

Cons:
Short battery life
Cost 800/900

MacBook/MacBook Pro (13.3")
Pros:
Mac
Disk Drive

Cons:
Mac
Expensive 900-1100 (cheaper if you sell the free ipod)
Heavier (4.5-4.7 lbs)

This is by no means the complete list of what is available.

I actually looked seriously at the ASUS that GoBruins mentioned, but just felt Lenovo would be more reliable/sturdier.

As for reliability, Asus ranks way ahead according to this study.

I think the ASUS ULV30 is probably the better buy - you don't need the processing power that much unless you're planning to run games on it. And the battery life is seems incredible though.

Thanks for the advice. I ordered the X201 with the dock. I'm going to Cornell, so weight will matter when scaling that ridiculous hill.
