My only advice is probably what you've already read, but can't stress it enough. Knock out the answers that obviously don't make sense first, and narrow it down to 2 or 3 that might be correct, then dissect those by what's different about each one (tense, subject-verb agreement, etc.). I caught myself a couple times breezing through a question and then realizing that because I hadn't fully looked at all the answers, I'd selected the second best one. Also, read the answers first before you read the passages. I think it subliminally clues your mind to what to look for and you save some time cross-referencing because you've already knocked out a couple of obvious no's before you finish reading the paragraph. As the questions get harder, the answers also get more similar, so you really have to hunt to find the distinction sometimes. Can't tell you how much respect I have for the ESL folks who do well on the verbal. They're the real heroes.

Is that only for SC questions or for all verbal questions?

When I referenced reading the answers first, I was talking about CR. When I did practice tests on SC, I also read aloud the entire sentence, and all the choices. Sometimes you can knock some answers out just because they don't sound right. Obviously, you can't do this during the actual test, but if you use the same tone and cadence in your head, it can be just as effective.

One question I have is given that my verbal was lower than my quant, why was my percentile rank so much higher for V (like 27 points higher)? Are people really that great at number crunching?
Hope this helps anyone in my situation or similar

Congrats..

THe reason for having high percentile in verbal than quant is that the number of people who get verbal 40 is less than the number of people who get 40 in quant. so, for the same range of quant and verbal scores, you would get high percentile on verbal and less on quant.

enh. I'm right-brained. I started off as an English Major and switched to Business. Failed accounting a couple times, but did well in Investment and Corporate finance. Started my own business and have always made money o ventures, but I have to hire people to crunch numbers. I'm a big-idea guy, but if someone hired me as a CFO, the company would go bust in weeks.

Congrats faraji13!!

I am also a Big Idea type lol. I was thinking about doing the week or 2 week study and go in and just take the test. I tend to do better with less prep and more sleep. I am taking Calculus starting next week. Would you suggest I take the test after the class?? Will Cal help?

Nitty:

Don't know that calculus is really going to help you that much. As far as the quant section, what I found on the actual test were Geometry problems, overlapping sets, powers, and roots, some fractions, and mean/median questions. Pretty much high school math, but the way it's presented is a little more complex. Take a lot of the practice tests to get a feel for the actual flow of the test. Also, my 10 days were pretty much spent exclusively studying. If you're working as well, that might be a lot tougher. Good Luck!

A's of course :) Thats why I feel so ready for the world lol! I was the top of my class in Algebra, Interm. Algebra/Trig, and Pre-Calc. Now its time to do this Calc which is a prereq at most schools. I was thinking about doing the Berkley online class but I like meeting new people so I am going to Baruch for Calculus I and Microeconomics. Their course is a bit more rigorous, so we will see how I hold up. Thanks for asking. I did purchase a teachers edition of Berkley Pre-Cal book online to review before I head into Calc. They def work on more geometry then what I had in pre-cal here in NY.

Congrats :)

I took one Algebra class in NYU and was the top student for that class, but it was just Algebra so I guess its not that big of a deal. When do you plan on taking the GMAT again and have you taken any practice tests recently?

That's something to be proud of! Your taking the steps that are right for you. I need to start taking prep test I know. I have been working on my reading and writing skills also. I was having a problem with speed reading, and understanding the questions, so I have been reading recommended books, and magazines also. Maybe next week I will take a practice test and see how I do. Write me offline.
