Took the GMAT bright and early at 8:00 AM in DC today. Was looking forward to getting my tail handed to me and was very pleased when I got the results. It seems like a lot of people on some boards will commit hari-kari if they don't get a 740, (which I don't really understand) but I'm ecstatic about my little 680. From my conversations with Admissions folks, GMAT scores might keep you out, but they don't get you in to the school in and of themselves. Only took the GMAT on such short notice because of a specific opportunity, and studied hardcore-ish since about the 9th or 10th of January. Made it to about page 150 in the OG book and did the PR, Kaplan, and MGMAT CATs.

Kaplan: 490 (Did last night and was getting tired so skipped most of the verbal)
GMAC: Didn't take. Why they don't have Mac compatibility is beyond me.
Bought a Kaplan math book but didn't crack it until last night (with Quant scores to prove it) Didn't study Verbal at all as I'm much better in V than Quant naturally.
Analysis:
1.The OG book certainly helped me prepare for what kinds of questions I was going to get and provided the basic quant foundation as I had forgotten most of this stuff after high school.
2.Taking multiple practice CAT's was a huge help because it got me into the rhythm of dissecting and answering questions quickly, knowing when just to guess and move on, and how to allocate time and effort.
3. I was relaaaaaxed going into the test. I assumed I would have to take it again given my practice test scores and such a short study window, so while I took it seriously, I didn't find myself freaking out. Got a decent night's sleep last night and watched some Family Guy to unwind.
One question I have is given that my verbal was lower than my quant, why was my percentile rank so much higher for V (like 27 points higher)? Are people really that great at number crunching?

My only advice is probably what you've already read, but can't stress it enough. Knock out the answers that obviously don't make sense first, and narrow it down to 2 or 3 that might be correct, then dissect those by what's different about each one (tense, subject-verb agreement, etc.). I caught myself a couple times breezing through a question and then realizing that because I hadn't fully looked at all the answers, I'd selected the second best one. Also, read the answers first before you read the passages. I think it subliminally clues your mind to what to look for and you save some time cross-referencing because you've already knocked out a couple of obvious no's before you finish reading the paragraph. As the questions get harder, the answers also get more similar, so you really have to hunt to find the distinction sometimes. Can't tell you how much respect I have for the ESL folks who do well on the verbal. They're the real heroes.
Thats why I feel so ready for the world lol! I was the top of my class in Algebra, Interm. Algebra/Trig, and Pre-Calc. Now its time to do this Calc which is a prereq at most schools. I was thinking about doing the Berkley online class but I like meeting new people so I am going to Baruch for Calculus I and Microeconomics. Their course is a bit more rigorous, so we will see how I hold up. Thanks for asking. I did purchase a teachers edition of Berkley Pre-Cal book online to review before I head into Calc. They def work on more geometry then what I had in pre-cal here in NY.
