A mixture contains nothing but water and acetone in a ratio of 1 : 2. [#permalink]

A mixture contains nothing but water and acetone in a ratio of 1 : 2. After 200 mL of water is added to the mixture, the ratio of water to acetone is 2 : 3. What is the original volume of the mixture ?

A. 1,800 mL
B. 1,900 mL
C. 2,000 mL
D. 2,100 mL
E. 2,200 mL

The volume of water and acetone in the original mixture can be written as:
Water = 1x mL
Acetone = 2x mL

Since 200mL water is added to the mixture giving the new ratio as 2:3
\((1x+200)/2x=2/3\)
\(3x+600=4x\)
\(x=600\)

Original Mixture = 3x = 3*600 = 1800mL

Hence, answer is option A.
