A report released by the World Intellectual Property Organization, the UN agency responsible for the international patent cooperation treaty, said that American universities filed more patent applications than any country, though non-American universities are gaining ground.

a) than any
b) than did any
c) than any other
d) as did those of any
e) than those of any other

Things to note:

1. We need to compare patents with the countries, hence we need those
2. We never write X is better than any writer. In this case, any includes X himself, hence it is illogical.
We say X is better that any other writer.

Coming to the options:

a) than any
Wrong. We need any other
b) than did any
Wrong. We need any other
c) than any other
We are incorrectly comparing patents with the countries
d) as did those of any
Wrong. We need any other
e) than those of any other
Correct

Though C may seem tempting, you cannot compare patents filed by "American Universities" to "any other country"

Hence, E is correct

Option E says countries are filing patents rather than universities.

A report released by the World Intellectual Property Organization, the UN agency responsible for the international patent cooperation treaty, said that American universities filed more patent applications than any country, though non-American universities are gaining ground.

a) than any
b) than did any
c) than any other
d) as did those of any

First, please explain what "those" here refers to ---"Applications" or " universities"?

Are we comparing "American university with other universities........ or are we comparing "Application of American university to applications of any other country..

Please help to explain the same.
