E. fish, which peaked in 1989 but has since declined or plateaued for most species,

I would keep it simple and go with A... :-D

D, E - use of which after fish...
C - use of past perfect, decline or plateau, placement of which
B - wrong use of participles, awkward

I disagree,

Clause 1= After increasing steadily for centuries, the total annual catch of all wild fish peaked in 1989 (total annual catch is the subject and peaked is the verb:
Clause 2= since that time, the total catch for most species has declined or plateaued. prompting conservation efforts designed to help prevent population crashes and possible extinctions ( now this is where it gets interesting, should this be treated as independent or a dependent clause? coz if independent what does since that time refer to?
I will say it should be dependent, and in that case it cannot have a semi-colon and therefore choice A is incorrect.
I will pick B. also notice the verb-ing modifier "prompting" correctly modifies the previous clause's subject.

Expert advise required..

The correct answer is A.

Lets analyze A and B.

After increasing steadily for centuries, the total annual catch of all wild fish peaked in 1989; since that time, the total catch for most species has declined or plateaued, prompting conservation efforts designed to help prevent population crashes and possible extinctions.

The verb "has declined" express an action that started in the past, but continues is the present. Correct
The "ING + COMMA" (prompting ) correctly refers to the preceding clause, it expresses the results of the decline

After increasing steadily for centuries, the total annual catch of all wild fish peaked in 1989, but with the total catch since then declining or plateauing in the case of most species, prompting conservation efforts designed to help prevent population crashes and possible extinctions.

The ING form in the highlighted verbs is wrong. The ING form used as a verb must include an "is/are", however even in this case this option would be wrong. The present perfect is the correct choice. Let me add also that "but" is the wrong connector.

The semicolon in the GMAT connects two independent/main clauses, but they can be connected. Refer here

(A) fish peaked in 1989; since that time, the total catch for most species has declined or plateaued, prompting

(B) fish peaked in 1989, but with the total catch since then declining or plateauing in the case of most species, prompting

(C) fish had peaked in 1989; since that time, the decline or plateau of the total catch for most species, which prompted

(D) fish, which peaked in 1989, and, in the case of most species, it has declined or plateaued since, prompted

(E) fish, which peaked in 1989 but has since declined or plateaued for most species, and this prompted

The question is based on Construction.

The construction of Option A is appropriate. The semi colon separates the two parts of the sentence. The phrase “since that time” indicates a change in the situation and the participle modifier at the end of the sentence indicates the result of the decrease or stagnation in the total catch. So, Option A can be eliminated.

There is a second independent clause lacking in Option B. The prepositional phrase “with the total catch since then declining or plateauing in the case of most species” should have been replaced by an independent clause – the total catch has declined or plateaued in the case of most species. The conjunction ‘but’ should join two independent clauses and not a clause to a phrase. So, Option B can be eliminated.

The noun forms ‘decline’ and ‘plateau’ change the meaning of the sentence. While ‘the decline of the total catch’ might still be considered appropriate, the phrase ‘the plateau of the total catch’ is not idiomatically appropriate. Furthermore, the relative pronoun ‘which’ cannot refer to ‘species’ as the meaning conveyed is that the species promoted conservation efforts. So, Option C can be eliminated.

The construction of Option D is awkward. The phrase “in the case of most species, it has declined or plateaued since” is clumsy. The phrase is placed after a subordinate clause that describes the total catch and the coordinating conjunction ‘and’. So, the phrase also should have been in the form of a subordinate clause – which declined or plateaued since. Therefore, Option D can be eliminated.

The pronoun ‘this’ is ambiguous as it is not clear what prompted conservation efforts. So, Option E can also be eliminated.

Therefore, A is the most appropriate option.

Hello shrya,

We hope this finds you well.

Having gone through the question and your query, we believe we can resolve your doubt.

The use of "which" is not exactly the error in Options C, D, and E.

In Option C, the error is the use of the past perfect tense verb "had peaked" to refer to the later of two actions that concluded in the past - the catch increasing and then peaking - remember, the past perfect tense (marked by the use of helping verb "had") is used when a sentence contains two actions in the past; the helping verb "had" is used with the action in the "greater past".

In Options D and E, information that is vital to the core meaning of the sentence - the fact that the catch peaked in 1989 and has declined or plateaued since then - is placed between two commas; thus these answer choices fail to convey the cause-effect relationship between the catch declining/plateauing and conservation efforts being prompted; remember, information that is vital to the core meaning of the sentence should never be placed between commas.

All the best!
