Oh! "Had not doubted" is definitely a past perfect tense.... although I still feel like "had not doubted" and "had no doubt" (also past perfect?) mean slightly different things.

After performing failure analysis on the ripped gearbox, the vibration analysts had not doubted that the spikes in vibration spectrum observerd in the morning had been caused by the leakage in lubrication mechanism of the pumping system.

This is likely testing verb tense form/subject-verb agreement and idiomatic expression (?). "Had not doubted" should be "had no doubt" and the double "had" time frames seem very suspicious. The subject-verb agreement split is easiest to eliminate. B and E can be eliminated because "the spikes" are the main subject and should be followed by a plural verb. We know the idiomatic expression should be "had no doubt". That leaves us with C.

(A) had not doubted that the spikes in vibration spectrum observed in the morning had been caused

(B) had no doubt that the spikes in vibration spectrum observed in the morning was caused

(C) had no doubt that the spikes in vibration spectrum observed in the morning were caused

(D) had not doubted that the spikes in vibration spectrum observed in the morning were caused

(E) had no doubt that the spikes in vibration spectrum which were observed in the morning was caused

Isn't the sentence formation wrong itself? egmat

The sequence of events is:

spikes observation, failure analysis, vibration analyst conclusion( no doubt)

had --> presents the older action among two past actions.

Should'nt the sentence have been?
