(A) had not doubted that the spikes in vibration spectrum observed in the morning had been caused

(B) had no doubt that the spikes in vibration spectrum observed in the morning was caused

(C) had no doubt that the spikes in vibration spectrum observed in the morning were caused

(D) had not doubted that the spikes in vibration spectrum observed in the morning were caused

(E) had no doubt that the spikes in vibration spectrum which were observed in the morning was caused

Had not doubted is idiomatically wrong or is it a tense error?

After performing failure analysis on the ripped gearbox, the vibration [#permalink]
Isn't the sentence formation wrong itself? egmat

The sequence of events is:

spikes observation, failure analysis, vibration analyst conclusion( no doubt)

had --> presents the older action among two past actions.

Should'nt the sentence have been?

After performing failure analysis on the ripped gearbox, the vibration analysts did not doubt that the spikes in vibration
spectrum observed in the morning had been caused by the leakage in lubrication mechanism of the pumping system.
