This is likely testing verb tense form/subject-verb agreement and idiomatic expression (?). "Had not doubted" should be "had no doubt" and the double "had" time frames seem very suspicious. The subject-verb agreement split is easiest to eliminate. B and E can be eliminated because "the spikes" are the main subject and should be followed by a plural verb. We know the idiomatic expression should be "had no doubt". That leaves us with C.
