D is the best answer.

As well as getting away unscathed, Kim managed to gather valuable knowledge about orchids and bring home scores of rare specimens, compliments of Brazilian environmentalists.

The use of as well as is incorrect in A. The use of also in B and C creates redundancy in the sentence. Besides already signals that Kim performs some other actions, hence there is no need to introduce also to modify Kim as such modifications create redundancies in the sentence.
In E, there is a parallelism error. unscathed, a verbed modifier, is not parallel to managed to gather valuable knowledge, a verb and its predicate.
We are left with D as the correct answer that is parallel. got away unscathed is parallel to managed to gather valuable knowledge.

A. As well as getting away unscathed, Kim managed to gather valuable knowledge about orchids and bring home scores of rare specimens

B. Besides getting away unscathed, Kim also managed to gather valuable knowledge about orchids and bring home scores of rare specimens

C. Besides getting away unscathed, also Kim managed to gather valuable knowledge about orchids and bring home scores of rare specimens

'Kim managed to gather valuable knowledge about orchids and bring home scores of rare specimens' is okay.

B. Besides getting away unscathed, Kim also managed to gather valuable knowledge about orchids and bring home scores of rare specimens - WRONG. 'Besides' and 'also' are redundant.

C. Besides getting away unscathed, also Kim managed to gather valuable knowledge about orchids and bring home scores of rare specimens - WRONG. Incorrect placement of 'also' besides redundancy.

D. Kim not only got away unscathed, but also managed to gather valuable knowledge about orchids and bring home scores of rare specimens - CORRECT. Proper idiom - 'got' and 'managed'. 'Gather' and 'bring' are parallel for verb 'managed'.

E. Kim got away not only unscathed, but also managed to gather valuable knowledge about orchids and bring home scores of rare specimens - WRONG. Idiom issue - 'Got away' is common to both 'not only' and 'but also' thus improperly put together.

The part 'managed to gather valuable knowledge about orchids and bring home scores of rare specimens' is correct in all the option.

IMO Answer D.

Co relative conjunction not only X but also Y.. and idiom usage is correct..
