At a certain carnival with 800 patrons, 300 of the female patrons like clowns, and 450 of the patrons are male. What is the total number of patrons who like clowns?
(1) At least 450 of the males at the carnival do not like clowns.
(2) 50 females at the carnival do not like clowns.

Solution:
Pre Analysis:
  • Best way to solve such questions is using a 2*2 grid

Statement 1: At least 450 of the males at the carnival do not like clowns
  • According to this statement, males who do not like clown \(\ge 450\)
  • But total number of males is 450
  • Therefore, males who do not like clown \(= 450\) and who like clown \(=0\)
  • total number of patrons who like clowns = 300
  • Thus, statement 1 alone is sufficient and we can eliminate options B, C and E

[b]Statement 2: 50 females at the carnival do not like clowns
  • According to this statement, females who do not like clown \(= 50\)
  • This will be of no help to get the answer

Hence the right answer is Option A
