How does the waitlist move at Haas?

I'm guessing the below three events to trigger waitlists to move -

1. R2 deadline
2. R1 deposit deadline (does anyone have an idea as to when this is?)
3. People withdrawing

Any ideas as to how many are waitlisted this year from R1?

I am a waitlisted candidate and will be interviewing march 2nd week.

Even I am curious when is the deposit due for R1.
R2 deadline should definitely see some movement - However, i think it would be more of dings for R1 people on waitlist and accomodating R2 people in that queue.

They may not accept many people of the waitlist until they review R3 apps at least. [May be even R4].

Though, none of this is a fact - its pure speculation.
I do hope it turns out to be incorrect and they accept most of us waitlisted folks.

I just keep reminding myself - its not as bad as a ding - but then, who knows it turns out to be worse than a ding - a ding after 8 months of pain. :beat

congrats hmmnyc! PM me if you want to meet up for Super Saturday.

As for the W/L questions, here are some facts that I know of:

1. R1 W/L people will be reconsidered after R2 decisions go out. In general, the adcom tries not to keep people waiting for more than one round. But of course, some candidates are right on the fence, which may cause them to have to wait until R3 or R4.

2. There will be W/L movement after 3/18, the date the adcom told W/L people to submit their additional information by.

3. There should be some movement after the R1 deposit deadline, but that's speculation on my part. There will definitely be movement for R2 W/L people after R3 decisions.

Hope that helps calm some nerves! Stop speculation and relax! :P (I know it's difficult though...)

Hey guys,

Thanks for the kind words and the SS report! We always want to know what the applicants think of the event so we can continually improve. :)

As for there being mostly consultants and tech, it's probably because all the financial people were in the first Super Saturday (at least it felt like everyone I spoke to were from NYC doing finance :P).

Last year had 3900 or so applications, so only 100 more to go to beat that (and R4 should beat that). Congrats on getting an interview in these very tough times!

Hardestadt is probably correct that one should take the optimism with a grain of salt, not just at Haas, but at any school right now. BUT, that is generally our feeling at the moment. A cautious optimism. Many off-campus recruiting companies come around late March/April time frame, and in the past, more than 50% of the jobs were found that way. Also, the Haas alums have been very helpful in these times, sending us job links and other tips. Hopefully that will help all of us find a job, haha!

puipui, R3 interview invites will come through email, and it should start any time now (if not already).

Good luck everyone and I'm praying that all 4 of you interviewed get in (and others get on the waitlist!)

K.

I got a call from Peter Johnson at 9 p.m. today. I am in with the Haas Merit Scholarship! :-D
When I left my work earlier this evening I was 100% sure I would get a ding letter. Quite a few of my friends had to endure several hours of my incoherent whining. When I accepted the call I was at a dinner with a EU Commissioner, which is why my replies on the phone were erratic at best. Both parties probably thought I was a total weirdo, which is fine with me as long as the admit to Haas isn't revoked

I'm considering Haas too. Location, Information on the website and what I have read about the school makes Haas one of my top preferences. Next step is to learn more about the school from infosessions and alumni.

I'm still debating whether or not to apply. I will only have 2.5 yrs we by the time I matriculate, which doesn't seem like it would be enough. Isn't Haas known for older students with more WE on avg?

I am going to have 3 years of WE on matriculation and I still plan to give it a shot. I noticed that they have several '05 grads in their Class of 2010 facebook group. They may be trending younger to be some degree as well. It's still definitely a stretch for me - but I want to give it a shot anyway because I think I'd really enjoy it there and the location is unbeatable considering my ideal job after graduation would be I-Banking in San Francisco.

Berkeley definitely trends "older" than other schools (Stanford comes to mind), but that does NOT mean they don't accept younger applicants. If you only have 2-3 years of WE, but they're great WE and you can write good essays about them, then you are very competitive. :)

Great to see some Haas applicants! :)

Hi kryzak,

My husband and I are both planning on applying to Berkley coming Fall. We visited the campus in April and absolutely loved it. But I am a little bit worried about my GMAT score, I have a 82% (quant), 76% (verbal) split , score - 670. My back ground is engineering and i have a Masters GPA of 3.8.

Will taking a course help my case? Or do you think i should rather focus on the application part?

Thanks.

hi prospect,

Your GMAT is below the mean of Haas, but your Masters GPA is very high (especially in Engineering). What is your undergrad GPA if you don't mind me asking, and was it in Engineering?

I think you may be fine if you ace the essays and recommendations. There are fewer women applicants in general, so that will give you some edge.

EDIT: If you are confident you can hit a 700, it might be worth a try.

Hi kryzak,

Thank you for your response. I did my undergraduate in India also in Engineering. I studied in a National Institute of Technology and we did not have a gpa system in school. I have a First class with Distinction ,this is the highest grade given to students.

Thanks.

Hi propect,

Your top grades in engineering school will definitely offset the slightly below average (Haas average that is) GMAT score. But the Indian background (even as a woman) will make it slightly more competitive, though not as competitive as a Male/Indian/IT. Many Indian applicants are engineers with good scores/GPAs and very high GMATs. So keep that in mind.

After knowing your background better, I would still suggest that you try to raise your GMAT score to the 700+ area if possible. But once you do that, I would spend a lot of time working on your essays to make sure you bring out your unique qualities and tell a good story.
