Re: Improving and gaining confidence... - GMAT Story [#permalink]
I have started working on OG problems. I was feeling happy while I was doing very well in the initial 120 questions from OG12 of PS. In the 4th set of 40 questions, I got 7 questions wrong. I am getting concerned about that. I need to weed out the concept errors.

I am planning to take my MGMAT4 this Saturday. I want to increase both quant and verbal scores at least by 2 points.

I checked for GMAT dates, the website seems to say between 19th-24th November the test is going to be 4\frac{1}{2} hours with additional 12 to 15 questions. So, I need to take it either before or after this date. I hope, I will not be too late for round 2.

I read first few chapters and then dropped the idea of working on that book as it was consuming all my prep time. If you have sufficient time you could improve your SC score and writing with that book.

Thanks. I've heard some good reviews about Aristotle SC Grail and I'm leaning more towards it.

I finally registered for the test. I should not get that much worried as I have scored terribly the last time so no way I could get lower score than my previous attempt. I should get more disciplined and get focused on all different sections of gmat instead of just focusing on my weakness. In my previous attempts I have scheduled a date before even I started making any progress. This time I have spent enough time to learn the concepts, now it is just matter of increasing my quant accuracy and staying focused while doing RC, CR and SC questions. I want to achieve my target score this time.

I would like to think it is possible too :-)

Why wouldn't it be possible? Need to focus on weaknesses and work them through. I am sure you will do well. Keep up the work

I am still wondering how can i get so many SC questions wrong in GMATprep while getting so many correct in MGMAT.

I haven't done complete analysis but on the high level
17/41 -Incorrect in verbal
8 - Incorrect in SC
5 - Incorrect in RC
4 - Incorrect in CR
I am not happy about getting so many wrong in SC and CR. I don't know why but I couldn't analyze the SC questions that well while doing the test. I couldn't identify the errors in the underlined portion. I was always ended up reviewing the answer choices. I couldn't find 2/3 splits and I ended up reading every single answer choice completely.

One solace is I was able to feel comfortable and in control of the RCs. Please let me know your suggestions.

Don't worry too much about finding splits, since this technique doesn't work that often. I also found myself having to fully read all the answer choices, especially for long and hard sentences.

Analyze why you failed a problem: silly mistake? lack of vocabulary? fell in a trap? Do you use a logbook?

By the way, I never liked MGMAT phrasing of problems in Verbal; I find they don't closely mimic the real thing. Maybe you got used to MGMAT's phrasing, and hence aren't comfortable with the official phrasing?

I skyrocketed my Verbal performance by doing a bootcamp training with OG12 + OG Verbal, knocking down problems in sets of 30 each. At some point in time you'll start to pick up patterns in the problems.

I would suggest to first improve your CR, which in turn will also help your RC. Make sure you clearly identify the point, and don't fall for "out of scope" answers. Once you get the hang of it, CR and RC are a joke.

And do not underestimate the AWA ;)

You Quant ability, makes you a good candidate for a 700+.

I'm glad it's over for me...

Padawan, Thanks for your encouragement. How is your essay writing going?

After a lot of introspection, I changed the test date to December. I have started practicing and analyzing the all the SC questions. This time, I am focused on identifying why each answer choice is wrong instead of just focusing on POE and finding the answer alone. I have identified more SC material and RC material to practice. I am working on veritas questions for CR as I don't like Kaplan questions for CR that much.

Some how, I need to reach 50 in quant 40+ in verbal so that I will easily cross my target score.

I like PadawanOfTheGMAT's suggestion about improving CR which in turn improves RC. I want to go a step further. I felt that SC improves CR which in turn will improve RC:).

I just want to cross 700 just like you did. As I have scored well in quant, I want to keep the target one point higher so that I don't stop spending time for quant on a regular basis. For verbal, if I went from 37 to 31 so easily, I need to get as many CR questions right so that my verbal score doesn't drop drastically in the final exam.

I think it should be "as you did" since "like" can only be followed by a noun
