Pokerhauntus:
Thanks for reaching out to the community! This is such an interesting batch of questions.
Q: How much would a year of experience at a job like this improve my MBA apps? My post MBA goals are either an LDP or a job in non-technical marketing (CPG)
A: I think it would. It would demonstrate that you are ready to come back to the "fold" as far as a more traditional job is concerned. The AdComs might be more reassured of your long-term career potential seriousness this way. You would just need to explain the transitions in your pre-MBA journey appropriately.
Q: Could I include strong LORs as a part of the negotiation process? Is this too early to tell a new employer I plan to leave in 2 years for an MBA?
A: How would you negotiate a strong LOR? That seems a bit odd. I would also not necessarily indicate your plans to leave upfront. It would make you a "lame duck" of sorts on the job. I would - to borrow a poker expression here - hold your cards close to your chest as for your MBA plans.
Q: Is there a way to demonstrate leadership and impact as a poker dealer to be competitive for schools like Kellogg, Booth and Wharton? I wouldn't take a "promotion" as my casino supervisors are paid terribly and overworked.
A: I suppose there could be. I would need to learn more about your experience. You would be surprised how creative one can be when discussing matters like leadership even in unconventional roles or sectors.
In short, your profile has its unique advantages in that it is truly out of the box; however, if a strategy not executed perfectly it could really be a flop. Please reach out to us at
