Stopped me in my tracks as I read it.

To read such language effectively, you can focus on the essence of the sentence - what the sentence says if you don't consider all the modifiers.

In this case, the essence of the sentence is the following:

    However, the amount of carbon dioxide added to the atmosphere ... is equivalent to the amount of carbon dioxide that the corn ... removed ... as that corn grew.
