Many times in the books we're studying from, a concept will be explained somewhat briefly, an example will be given, and then they will move on to the next topic. I often wish that I had more examples of the concept to really drive home the point.

Anyways, today I had an idea of creating threads for certain concepts which fall under these categories.

The idea is that people can come post examples of the concept in use to (a) validate their understanding and/or (b) provide a resource for others who are trying to understand the concept.

Today's concept: Hypothetical Subjunctive.

The hypothetical subjunctive is used under "certain circumstances to indicate unlikely or unreal conditions" - MGMAT

The example given in the MGMAT SC book is "To overcome my fear of germs, I will think about disease as though it were harmless." The word "were" is the verb constructed in the hypothetical subjunctive.

The book describes the construction of the hyp.sub. as the simple past of a verb, with the exception being the verb 'to be', which is always formed 'were'.

My examples for the day:
"To take his terrible medicine, the child acted as if it tasted like candy"

If you notice that one of the posts mis-uses the concept, PLEASE say something, otherwise it defeats the purpose of the thread :D
