Hi EGMAT Expert,

This Question is from GMAT Prep : Practice Exam 5.

I am unable to understand how option choice B can be inferred based on given information.

To be considered for inclusion in the Barbizon Film Festival, a film must belong either to the category of drama or of comedy. Drama always receives more submissions but has a lower acceptance rate than comedy. All of the films are either foreign or domestic. This year, the overall acceptance rate for domestic films was significantly higher than that for foreign films. Within each category, drama and comedy, however, the acceptance rate for domestic films was the same as that for foreign films.

From the cited facts it can be properly concluded that

A. significantly fewer foreign films than domestic films were accepted

B. a higher proportion of the foreign than of the domestic films submitted were submitted as dramas

C. the rate of acceptance of foreign films submitted was the same for dramas as it was for comedies

D. the majority of the domestic films submitted were submitted as comedies

E. the majority of the foreign films submitted were submitted as dramas

Analyzing the Argument

No of Submissions Drama > Comedy
Acceptance Rate Drama < Comedy

This year
Acceptance rate Domestic >>>>> Foreign

Acceptance rate of Drama (Domestic) = Acceptance rate of Drama(Foreign)
Acceptance rate of Comedy (Domestic) = Acceptance rate of Comedy(Foreign)

Question Stem : We have to find an inference based on above.

POE
A) Information available only for Acceptance rate of Domestic vs Foreign. No information available on actual no of Domestic film or Foreign films. Incorrect.
B) Proportion of Foreign submitted as dramas = Foreign (Dramas) / Foreign(Dramas + Comedy)
Proportion of Domestic submitted as drams = Domestic ( Dramas) / Domestic ( Dramas + Comedy)

Unable to interpret further

C) For this to be true, Acceptance rate of Domestic = Acceptance rate of Foreign. but argument states Acceptance rate Domestic >>>>> Acceptance rate Foreign. Incorrect.
D) No information available about actual numbers. Incorrect
E) No information available about actual numbers. Incorrect

Through POE I am able to deduce that option choice B is correct answer, but i am not able to understand how B can be inferred based on information given in the argument.

OA:B

Kindly clarify
Thanks
Sahil
