Quote:
Psychologist: Do you take the time to stop and appreciate the beauty around you? According to a recent experiment, chances are you don’t. World famous violinist Josh Bell posed as a street musician in a Washington D.C. metro station to see how many people would stop and listen. Despite the fact that he was playing a $3.5 million handcrafted violin and had just sold out a concert in Boston where ticket prices averaged $100 each, very few people stopped to appreciate his beautiful performance. He made a measly $32 that day.

Conclusion: people do not take time and appreciate the beauty around.
First bold part: It responds to the conclusion in affirmation.
Second bold part: Second is the example to support the conclusion.

Quote:
In the argument given, the two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?

A. The first identifies the content of a claim, the accuracy of which is at issue in the argument; the second is evidence that has been used to support that claim.
-- Correct: First identifies the conclusion and second is the evidence to support the same.

B. The first identifies the content of a claim, the accuracy of which is at issue in the argument; the second is a conclusion drawn on the basis of that claim.
-- Second is not the conclusion.

C. The first is an objection that has been raised against a position defended in the argument; the second is that position.
-- Second is an example, not a position.

D. The first is an opinion that has been used to support an explanation that the argument challenges; the second supports that explanation.
-- Fist is supporting the conclusion, not against it.

E. The first is evidence that has been used to support an explanation that the argument challenges; the second is a competing explanation that the argument favors.
-- Same as D.

IMO answer is A

The first is some kind of conclusion of an experiment. ANd the second supports it
In the argument given, the two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?

A. The first identifies the content of a claim, the accuracy of which is at issue in the argument; the second is evidence that has been used to support that claim. Sound ok for me

B. The first identifies the content of a claim, the accuracy of which is at issue in the argument; the second is a conclusion drawn on the basis of that claim. the second is not a conclusion

C. The first is an objection that has been raised against a position defended in the argument; the second is that position. both boldface fragments do not go against each other

D. The first is an opinion that has been used to support an explanation that the argument challenges; the second supports that explanation. The argument does not challenges anything

E. The first is evidence that has been used to support an explanation that the argument challenges; the second is a competing explanation that the argument favors. The first is not an evidence, ad the second is not a competing explanation, because both go in the same direction

The answer is A

Psychologist makes a claim that you dont listen
second is an evidence to support the claim.

B. The first identifies the content of a claim, the accuracy of which is at issue in the argument; the second is a conclusion drawn on the basis of that claim............SECOND IS NOT A CONCLUSION AND NOT BASED ON FIRST ONE

C. The first is an objection that has been raised against a position defended in the argument; the second is that position............FIRST IS NOT OBJECTION

D. The first is an opinion that has been used to support an explanation that the argument challenges; the second supports that explanation............ARGUMENT DOESNT CHALLENGE THE OPINION

E. The first is evidence that has been used to support an explanation that the argument challenges; the second is a competing explanation that the argument favors............FIRST IS NOT EVIDENCE

Premise 1: Psychologist: Do you take the time to stop and appreciate the beauty around you?
Premise 2: According to a recent experiment, chances are you don’t.
Premise 3: World famous violinist Josh Bell posed as a street musician in a Washington D.C. metro station to see how many people would stop and listen. First bold face is content of the claim which is do you take time to appreciate you, and its telling NO
Second bold face is supporting it by giving an explanation

A. The first identifies the content of a claim, the accuracy of which is at issue in the argument; the second is evidence that has been used to support that claim. Correct

B. The first identifies the content of a claim, the accuracy of which is at issue in the argument; the second is a conclusion drawn on the basis of that claim. Second is not the conclusion

D. The first is an opinion that has been used to support an explanation that the argument challenges; the second supports that explanation. First is not an opinion, its a result from an experiment

E. The first is evidence that has been used to support an explanation that the argument challenges; the second is a competing explanation that the argument favors Second is not competing

A. The first identifies the content of a claim, the accuracy of which is at issue in the argument; the second is evidence that has been used to support that claim.

Correct choice: since the first answer the question and the question is more elaborated later within the stimulus, that question identifies the content of a claim that we don’t appreciate the beauty around. The second supports the claim that we don’t appreciate the beauty around.

B. The first identifies the content of a claim, the accuracy of which is at issue in the argument; the second is a conclusion drawn on the basis of that claim.

The second isnt the consluson of the psychologist. The second is the evidence taken from an experiment.

C. The first is an objection that has been raised against a position defended in the argument; the second is that position.

The first is not an objection. No position is defended here. The second is evidence, not position.

D. The first is an opinion that has been used to support an explanation that the argument challenges; the second supports that explanation.

Argument doesn’t challenge the the firs boldface but supports.

E. The first is evidence that has been used to support an explanation that the argument challenges; the second is a competing explanation that the argument favors.

Argument doesn’t challenge the the firs boldface but supports. The second is the evidence, not explanation.
