Wow... rhyme, that experience is just... wrong. I would have said something professional but stern to the head recruiter if he told me I couldn't leave lunch 20 minutes earlier (when no one from their company is talking to me) to catch a flight.

Then first thing I'd do is report this to the school. I still can't believe a big firm would do this...

Yea, I plan to.

I hope this is the exception to how companies recruit.

Many companies ask you directly for feedback. Duke's Career Management Center also asks students for feedback and will pass the word around.

As for us not sharing the names, think of it this way:

As a b-school candidate, you are pretty anonymous. You are one of a gazillion candidates. The connection you have with a given school is relatively impersonal. If you knock school X and would never want to go there anyway, School Y will never know how you felt about X or probably much care. The likelihood of negative repercussions getting back to you is pretty slim.

On the other hand, the work world is much smaller and much more personal. At this stage in recruiting - Round 2 interviews and up - you lose that anonymity because there just aren't that many of you. In a given industry, word can get around. Witness Pelihu's posts about week on wall street events and how the alumni network was abuzz with who did what.

It's not that I don't trust this group of folks, but it's just too important to risk. And overall, there's just a certain level of professionalism around recruiting that requires an enormous amount of tact and discretion. I carry that to this board.

While I agree completely with one's decision not to disclose the company (I wouldn't do so myself), this thread indicates that the enormous amount of tact and discretion is not mutual!

True I guess companies arent recruiting 5000 people so its probably a lot harder to get lost in the crowd.

Oh, they were discrete and tactful, just not overly helpful....or too helpful, in Rhyme's case.

You wont believe this...

They called me today with an offer.

I can't believe that after I walked out on them!

WHAT?! That's just messed up... maybe they were testing you all to see who has the backbones to stand up for themselves and walk out? :)

oh, they are SO barking up the wrong tree!

I'll have to call Jess and see if she's heard. She likes the role a lot, and is hoping that HR is not representative.

It should go without saying that they are doing really badly right now, I'd tell Jess to seriously reconsider joining them, no matter the role. That and the offer is the low. If she does move forward, she should negotiate.

I'm new to this site, and rather late to this discussion, but in a strange way I think it may have been a test.

I think I missed a huge portion of your initial post, however I suspect that they may have been testing how well you dealt with bad conditions, intentionally or not. Not all business trips go smoothly. It sounds like you were at least somewhat tactful, and did make a point of speaking with the coordinator before you left.

Based on your messages, can I safely assume that you turned them down?

Cheers,

cP

1 post eh? Are you the recruiter/coordinator? :)

Yes, I turned them down.

edit: Yea, i guess I must have removed the story at some point, or maybe someone else deleted it.

rhyme,

No, I am not a recruiter, and everyone has to start at 1 post. :-D

It's all about what you do after that initial post. Me? I discovered GMAT Club just over two weeks ago, and I've been absorbing what I can.
