*kudos for all correct solutions

12x + 2y = 80% of 5y

So, 12x + 2y = 4y

Or, 12x = 2y

Or, y = 6x

So, x/y = 1/6, Answer must be (A)

This is how i solved

If 12x + 2y is 80% of 5y, what is the value of x/y ?

12x+2y = (80*5y/100)
12x+2y = 400y/100

Cross multiply to get 1200x +200y = 400 y
1200 x = 200y
x/y= 200/1200 = 1/6 = A

12x + 2y = 80y/100

so, 12x = 2y

that gives x/y =1/6

Ans: A

How did you get 12x + 2y = 80y/100?

Since, 12x + 2y is 80% of 5y

Hence, 12x + 2y = 4y

x/y = 1/6

This should be \(12x + 2y = \frac{80}{100} * 5y\)

You've got the correct answer, I think its just a typo

pushpitkc's approach is exactly the same as the approach I'd use.
However, here's another approach (for kicks!)

Let's try to find some values for x and y that satisfy the given information: 12x + 2y is 80% of 5y
Let's first let y = 20, and then figure out what value of x is needed.
We get: 12x + 2(20) is 80% of 5(20)
Simplify: 12x + 40 is 80% of 100
Evaluate: 12x + 40 = 80
So: 12x = 40
Solve: x = 40/12 = 10/3

So, x = 10/3 and y = 20 satisfies the given information.

What is the value of x/y ?
x/y = (10/3)/20
= (10/3)(1/20)
= 10/60
= 1/6

80% of 5y = 4y
-- 12x+2y=4y
-- 12x=2y
-- 6x=y
-- x/y = 1/6
Option A is the answer
