If xy ≠ 0, and 75 percent of x equals 125 percent of y, which of the following is true?

A. y is 25 percent of x
B. y is 40 percent of x
C. y is 60 percent of x
D. y is 140 percent of x
E. y is 166 2/3 percent of x

75% of x = 125% of y

75x = 125y

3x = 5y

y = \(\frac{3}{5}\)x.

y = 60% of x.

Note:\(\frac{3}{5}\) = 60%

The best answer is C.

75% = 3/4

125% = 5/4

Now, 3x/4 = 5y/4

Or, 3x = 5y = 15 (Say)

So, x = 5 and y = 3

Thus, y is 60% of x, Answer must be (C)

If xy ≠ 0, and 75 percent of x equals 125 percent of y, which of the [#permalink]
0.75x = 1.25 y
3/4 x = 5/4 y :converted into faction for ease of cancellation
3 x = 5 y :cancelled both the denominators
3/5 x = y :converted to y format
.60 x = y :final answer C

Hi All,

We're told that neither X nor Y can equal 0 and that 75% of X is equal to 125% of Y. We're asked which of the following is true. This question can be solved in a couple of different ways, including by TESTing VALUES.

IF....
X = 100, then (75% of X) = 75

75 = 125% of Y
75 = 1.25(Y) = (5/4)(Y)
(4/5)(75) = Y
300/5 = Y
60 = Y

Thus, Y = 60 when X = 100

Final Answer:

GIVEN: 75 percent of x equals 125 percent of y
Rewrite as: 3/4 of x = 5/4 of y
Or we can say: (3/4)(x) = (5/4)( y)
Multiply both sides by 4 to get: 3x = 5y
Divide both sides by 5 to get: 3x/5 = y
Rewrite as: y = (3/5)(x)
Or y = 3/5 of x
Or y = 60/100 of x
Or y = 60% of x

Answer: C
