In ancient times, Nubia was the principal corridor where there were cultural influences transmitted between Black Africa and the Mediterranean basin.

(A) where there were cultural influences transmitted
(B) through which cultural influences were transmitted - correct
(C) where there was a transmission of cultural influences
(D) for the transmitting of cultural influences
(E) which was transmitting cultural influences

'for the transmitting of' is wrong grammar. The correct phrase would be 'for the transmission of...'. B is the correct choice because it provides a grammatically correct description of Nubia.

A) where there were cultural influences transmitted
'where there were' is Ackward.
It also does not clearly indicate that the region was a conduit for
the transmission

(B) through which cultural influences were transmitted
Correct. It implies correctly that Nubia was the conduit enabling the transmission

(C) where there was a transmission of cultural influences
'a transmission of cultural influences' implies that it was transmitted by a single transmission. This changes the meaning.

(D) for the transmitting of cultural influences
'for the transmitting of' is not the correct Idiom - 'for the transmission of' would have been better

(E) which was transmitting cultural influences
This implies corridor is transmitting cultural influences, whereas corridor is just a conduit.

Ya...IMO B...

here its a good example of VAN priniciple..(if you have read MGMAT SC)..

the last two options are out as it says transmitting....but the culture is not transmitting presently..Moreover, the remaining doubt is removed when Ancient comes into picture.

Now, we have three options left...A, B and C..
Between (A,B) and C...you can drive the VAN (Verb,Adjective and Noun) Noun is given the least preference...hence C is out.

Now we have A and B...
"Where there were", if you observe closely, it is trying to communicate that Cultural influences were present in the Corridor itself and were transmitted.
Option B fits the Bill, it says that Through Corridor, the cultural influences were passed.

(Correct me if in case I am mistaken in split between A and B)

Re: In ancient times, Nubia was the principal corridor where there were cu [#permalink]
“corridor” is a medium, not a place, through which transmission is taking place. Therefore, “where” cannot be used. A and C are incorrect because of “where”.
D: “for the transmitting” is incorrect. “for the transmission” is correct.
E: “which” suggests that “corridor” is a source of transmission. But the intended meaning is that “corridor” is a medium through which “cultural influences were transmitted”.
B: “through which” conveys the intended meaning. Hence, B is the best choice.
