Given: John borrowed x dollars from Fred. Two months later, he repaid 324$ of his debt.

Asked: If the amount of the debt remaining is 25 percent more than the amount repaid, what is x?

Debt remaining = x - 324 = 1.25 * 324
x = 324 + 1.25 * 324 = 2.25 * 324 = $729

IMO A

Solution

Given
    • John borrowed x dollars from Fred
    • Fred repaid 324$ of his debt after two months
    • The debt remaining is 25 percent more than the amount repaid

To find
    • The value of x

Approach and Working out
    • x = Debt paid + Debt Remaining
    • x = 324 + 324 * 1.25
    • x = 324 *2.25
    • 324* 2 is 648 and 324*2.25 is certainly greater than 648,
    • The only option greater than 648 is option A.

Thus, option A is the correct answer.
Correct Answer: Option A

X = repaid amount + remaining debt

X = 324 + 1.25 * 324

X = 729.

A is the correct answer.

The highlighted part can again be simlified for faster calculation -

X = 324 + 1.25 * 324

Or, X = 324 ( 1 + 1.25)

Or, X = 324*2.25

Or, X = 729 , Answer must be (A)
