Many residents of Calovia are committed to using products containing recycled materials. Soon these consumers will get help in identifying such products from a book being published by the Calovian government. The book offers a comprehensive listing, by product type and brand, of goods sold in Calovia that contain recycled material. Therefore, publication of the book will almost certainly increase the use of products containing recycled materials in Calovia.

Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument?
A. Proceeds from the sale of the book are not expected to exceed the cost of its publication.
B. For numerous types of products, there are many brands that use recycled materials, although their manufacturers and distributors do nothing to advertise those brands’ recycled content.
C. For many materials, such as plastics, the recycling process results in a lower grade of material with a correspondingly different range of uses.
D. For many types of products listed in the book, all the brands available in Calovia use recycled materials.
E. Many manufacturers of products that contain recycled materials vary the proportion of recycled materials in those products in response to changes in price and availability.

we need to find the link between the premises and the conclusion.
premises:
1.Many residents of Calovia are committed to using products containing recycled materials.
2.Soon these consumers will get help in identifying such products from a book being published by the Calovian government.
3.The book offers a comprehensive listing, by product type and brand, of goods sold in Calovia that contain recycled material.
conclusion:
Therefore, publication of the book will almost certainly increase the use of products containing recycled materials in Calovia.

Question: Why will the book increase the use of recycle material?
Answer: The book will disclose products that contain "hidden" recycle material. Once these products are known, people will start buying them.....

B

Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument?
A. Proceeds from the sale of the book are not expected to exceed the cost of its publication. => not meaningful
B. For numerous types of products, there are many brands that use recycled materials, although their manufacturers and distributors do nothing to advertise those brands’ recycled content. => Book with add. value to the community by promoting the products using recycled products, which is in the interest of the Calovian residents (comp. w/ sentence 1)
C. For many materials, such as plastics, the recycling process results in a lower grade of material with a correspondingly different range of uses. => not meaningful
D. For many types of products listed in the book, all the brands available in Calovia use recycled materials.=> there would be no value add if all brands use recycled materials, it would even weaken the argument
E. Many manufacturers of products that contain recycled materials vary the proportion of recycled materials in those products in response to changes in price and availability. => not meaningful

A. "Cost" is irrelavant
B. shows how the new book will help customers to know about the products they purchase - Correct
C. Since the residents of Colovia are committed to using products containing recycled material, lower grade of material/quality of the
product is irrelavant
D. The question is whether the new book will help "increase" in the use of products containing recycled material. If a particular
product uses recycled material for all brands, there is no question of increase-in-use-of-products-with-recycled-material
E. price and availability - irrelavant

IMO: B

IMHO it should be B as the argument further justifies the buying decision which is the premise of the book.

The conclusion is: publication of the book will almost certainly increase the use of products containing recycled materials in Calovia.

Argument says that residents want to use products containing recycled materials.

Now, B says that there are many brands that use recycled materials, although their manufacturers and distributors do nothing to advertise those brands’ recycled content.

So, that being the case,

Book with listing of products using recycled material will come out -> Residents will get to know even about the brands that use recycled materials, although their manufacturers & distributors were doing nothing to advertise those brands’ recycled content -> Residents will prefer those materials (since argument mentions that residents want to use products containing recycled materials).

D actually does weaken the argument. D says: For many types of products listed in the book, all the brands available in Calovia use recycled materials.

Let's take a product: Pencil. So, according to D, all the brands available for pencil use recycled materials.

If that's the case, then the book really will not in any way, increase/decrease the use of "pencil" product category containing recycled materials, since people were already buying products with recycled material in the "pencil" product category, even before the publication of the book.

Publishing the book will increase the use of recycled material, only if reading the book will help citizens to know more about different products which use recycled material. If the citizens already have that knowledge then book will not help.

The writer's argument is that the publication of the book will increase the use of recycled material products. Why? Residents are committed to using recycled material products, and the book has a comprehensive list of things sold in the city that contain recycled material.

The gap in logic: Is it possible that the residents might already know the information in the book before it's published? If this were the case, it's likely that publishing the book, would not necessarily increase the use of recycled material products.

The only choice that addresses this gap in logic is B --> if there are a number of recycled material products, whose manufacturers and distributors are not advertising the fact that these products contain recycled material, how would anyone know that these products contain said substance? This answer choice strengthens the argument because the publication of that book is going to indicate that these products have recycled material.

Answer is B. --> I was between B and D though - D is eliminated because if all brands in this country were recyclable, then why would they be making the book in the first place; people wouldn't need help recycling goods.

IMO B - only this option states that The book will help as advertisement for products that contain recycled materials and customers will be inclined to them. indirectly increasing the product. Its an assumption which also strengthens the argument.
