Marketing director: If we make our jigsaw puzzles easier to complete [#permalink]
I was also confused between choice A & C. But I chose C because choice A says '' People rarely do puzzles a second time and may give away puzzles after completing them''
But question premise states ''If we make our jigsaw puzzles easier to complete then people will not take as long to do each puzzle and will, therefore, buy more of our puzzles''

How about a scenario where we know that people often don't buy puzzles for a second time but there is still a possibility where people could buy plenty of puzzles in their first purchase. If this were true then conclusion of the argument (Sales would rise) would still stand and is not weaken. Hence choice C is only left because all other choices are either strengthening, irrelevant or out of scope.

this is the conclusion: Clearly, making our jigsaw puzzles easier to complete is the best way to increase our sales.

the plan is to make puzzles easier, and this in result will increase sales.

let's take answer choice A:
People rarely do puzzles a second time and may give away puzzles after completing them
if they do not make puzzles second time - will this make them buy new ones? we don't know; we are not sure whether this will lead to an increase in sales.

answer choice C:
One of the main reasons that people purchase jigsaw puzzles is for the challenge

if people do purchase puzzles just because they like hard ones, will they purchase new ones? No. This clearly weakens the conclusion of the argument that the company's sales will increase, making easier puzzles.

we have to choose the answer choice that simply destroys the conclusion, and C is the answer choice that does that.

How does author arrive here?
The feeling that people get after accomplishing easy ones lead to them buying more puzzles and hence suggest an increase in sales.

Quote:
(C) One of the main reasons that people purchase jigsaw puzzles is for the challenge.

Yes it gives a reason, but how do i know how do I connect people's behavior and buying pattern?

Quote:
(D) Most jigsaw puzzles are purchased based on the image featured on the completed puzzle.

Alternate cause - IMAGE instead of difficulty level of puzzles connected to buying pattern.
