One critic's response to the philosopher's new work is not that the position it takes is heretical, as some have asserted, but instead nothing new to anyone who knows anything about the topic.
i) like vs as -> We need "as" since like is used for comparison and that like can not be followed by a clause => B and D out
ii) we need a structure "Not X but Y" => E Out
iii) instead vs rather -> Instead is used for replacement; rather is used for preference. In this sentence "instead" will work as we need a replacement not C but instead Y.
iv) Parallelism -> A is parallel as compared to C
A' structure => "It is not X but instead Y"
whereas
C's structure => "It is Not that X but rather that it is Y" - Not parallel - but rather that it is - "it is" is unnecessary

I think the answer is C.
"like" is the wrong comparison word, must use "as".
I think "Instead" is also being used incorrectly AFAIK. Usually you use "instead of", or "i did this instead".
so that leave us with C
