The Venetian Renaissance painter Vittore Carpaccio used sumptuous reds in most of his paintings. Since the recently discovered Venetian Renaissance painting Erato Declaiming contains notable sumptuous reds, it is probably by Carpaccio.

Which one of the following contains a pattern of flawed reasoning most similar to that in the argument above?

(A) Most Renaissance painters worked in a single medium, either tempera or oil paint. Since the Renaissance painting Calypso’s Bower is in oil, its painter probably always used oil paint.

(B) In Italian Renaissance painting, the single most common subject was the Virgin and child, so the single most common subject in Western art is probably also the Virgin and child.

(C) Works of art in the Renaissance were mostly commissioned by patrons, so the Renaissance work The Dances of Terpsichore was probably commissioned by a patron.

(D) The anonymous painting St. Sebastian is probably an early Florentine painting since it is in tempera, and most early Florentine paintings were in tempera.

(E) Since late-Renaissance paintings were mostly in oil, the Venetian late- Renaissance painter Arnoldi, whose works are now lost, probably used oil paint.

Look at the logic in the argument:

Painter A used B in most paintings.
Painting C has B.
Conclusion: C is probably by A.

(A) Most Renaissance painters worked in a single medium, either tempera or oil paint. Since the Renaissance painting Calypso’s Bower is in oil, its painter probably always used oil paint.

Most A painters used B or D.
Painting C is in D.
Conclusion: Painter of C probably always used D.

(B) In Italian Renaissance painting, the single most common subject was the Virgin and child, so the single most common subject in Western art is probably also the Virgin and child.

The common subject of A was B.
Conclusion: So the common subject of C must also be B.

(C) Works of art in the Renaissance were mostly commissioned by patrons, so the Renaissance work The Dances of Terpsichore was probably commissioned by a patron.
Works in A were commissioned by B.
Conclusion: Work C of A was probably commissioned by B.

(D) The anonymous painting St. Sebastian is probably an early Florentine painting since it is in tempera, and most early Florentine paintings were in tempera.
Most A (Florentine) paintings were in B (tempera).
Painting C is in B.
Conclusion: C is probably A.

Same logic as that of argument. Answer (D)

(E) Since late-Renaissance paintings were mostly in oil, the Venetian late- Renaissance painter Arnoldi, whose works are now lost, probably used oil paint

Most A paintings were in B.
Painter C belonged to A.
Conclusion: Painter C probably used B.

though i chose D as most suitable answer, I am finding it little difficult to differentiate between C and D. pls help.

Logic - X had mostly Y.....Since Z has Y thus it is X

C - X had mostly Y.....Since Z was X it has Y

D - Z is probably X since it has Y, because X mostly had Y - Similar to statement's logic

The logic of C does not match the logic of the argument. The argument's logic is flawed. The logic of (C) makes sense.

Logic of argument:

Painter A used B in most paintings.
Painting C has B.
Conclusion: C is probably by A.

This logic is flawed. Others could also use B in their paintings. So just because painting C has B, we cannot say that it must be by painter A. What we can say is that if painting C is by painter A, then probably it has B. This logic would be similar to logic of (C)

Logic of C:

Art works in A were commissioned by B.
Art work C was in A.
Conclusion: Work C was probably commissioned by B.

This logic is not flawed. Art works in A were commissioned by patrons. Art work C was in A. So probably it was commissioned by patrons. This logic is fine.

Took more than 5 min to address the CR question. Glad to have selected the correct choice.
But consumed a lot of time.

Though 4 mins is a bit much, mimic the reasoning questions do take some extra time. You need to figure out the structure of the original argument and then the structure of each option. On the plus side, you will only get 1 such question, if at all.
