Contrary to popular opinion, it may be that increasing fatal automobile accidents
as a result of producing
faster cars would be beneficial to society at large.

(A) increasing fatal automobile accidents as a result of producing (Use of increasing is wrong because would is used in the sentence)
(B) increased fatal automobile accidents resulting from the production of (Correct)
(C) increasing fatal accidents in automobiles resulting from the production of (Same as A)
(D) fatal automobile accidents that had increased from producing (Usage of past perfect is wrong)
(E) fatal automobile accidents that increased from producing (Sentence does not show the cause of fatal automobile accidents)

Kudos please if you like my explanation!

As a result of production of faster cars is the correct expression instead of 'producing faster cars'
So eliminate all except B and C
C can be eliminated because of the changed meaning of the expression- increasing fatal accidents in automobiles, it doesn't mean the same as 'increased fatal automobile accidents '
The former expression can imply electrical issues or engine issues.

Hi MadaraU,

Meaning -
May be the fact is that XYZ would be PQR
this fact is contrary to opinion

Following sentence is that fact:

subject (increasing fatal automobile accidents resulting from the production of faster cars)
Verb (would be)
object (beneficial to society at large)

Break down the subject:

NOUN - Accidents
which accidents? - Automobile
of what kind? - increasing & fatal
which accidents? - those accidents that result from the production of faster cars

Hope this makes sense now :)

Hi egmat

I am having difficulty understanding the meaning of this sentence, specially the use of "would be" in this context.
Also
In this sentence is "increased" used as a participial or a verb?

Could you please provide your wonderful analytical approach for this question?

Kudos please if you find the post useful

Hi,
A) Incorrect usage of 'increasing'
C) 'In Automobiles' is awkward in meaning
D) Incorrect Usage of 'Had'
E) Doesn't reflect the cause effect relationship properly
B) Is the best choice

B is the correct answer

we need -ed modifier here so increased is the right word

MANHATTAN REVIEW OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:

D and E incorrectly use the past and past perfect tenses, implying that the increase has occurred and is finished. The sentence as written implies that an increase may continue to occur. Choices A and C imply a degree of conscious agency which is inappropriate for the sentence. They imply that someone or something may quite deliberately increase fatal accidents. Choice B is the correct answer.
