You're seeing the old percentiles in GMATPrep. Q49 hasn't been in the 80s for quite some time now (you can always check the latest percentiles). And if you do well in verbal, you do not need a Q50 to cross 700. For example, any of the following should be 700+: Q41V45, Q45V40, Q44V41 or V42. Just keep in mind that you don't have to get 40+ in verbal. If you were able to get Q48-49 in your GMATPreps, you are definitely capable of getting a great score in quant on the actual GMAT, in which case you'd need only a 35 or 36 in verbal to get to 700.

now how to proceed now? I want to apply for indian bschools average score for which is above 700 at the very least. I plan to retake GMAT again in a month. is it ok?

Hi nivedita88,

Raising a 640 to a 740+ will likely take at least another 2 months of consistent, guided study - and you'll have to make significant improvements to how you handle BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections. As such, the goal to raise your score 100+ points in just one month is likely too difficult to be considered realistic. Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied?
2) What study materials have you used so far?
3) How have you scored on each of your CATs (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for each)?

Goals:
4) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
5) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

1) How long have you studied?
I studied for one month full time brushing up my basics
2) What study materials have you used so far?
only e-gmat verbal. This course is now expired. I no longer have access to their paid material
3) How have you scored on each of your CATs (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for each)?
Q49-48 on GMAT club tests
V25-31 on Gmat Club tests

Goals:
4) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
only after i get a 700+ gmat score
5) What Schools are you planning to apply to?
mostly aiming ivy league

Hi nivedita88,

Many Test Takers spend 3 months (or more) of consistent study time before they hit their 'peak' scores, so if you've really been studying for just one month, then you just have not put in enough time and effort to have scored higher yet. By extension, it stands to reason that you would likely continue to improve as you continue to study.

All of that having been said, raising a 640 to a 740+ will likely take at least another 2 months of consistent, guided study - and you'll have to make significant improvements to how you handle BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections. Based on what you have described, you had never taken a FULL-LENGTH practice CAT in a realistic fashion before you took the Official GMAT. As such, your Official GMAT is your 'baseline' score; and all things considered, it's really strong for an initial score.

1) When you say that you will not apply to Business School until you score at least a 700, are you comfortable with the idea that you might not apply until a year from now (or would you consider applying for Round 2 now if you scored 680 or 690?)?
2) Going forward, how many hours do you think you can consistently study each week?

I was getting Q48 Q49 consistently in mocks. A guy who gave the test with me scored Q49 with 75 percentile. I found it a bit wierd because in gmatprep I saw Q49 would mean 83 percentile.

Does this mean that to score 700+ I need Q50 at the very least?

I am thorough with the basics of quant and verbal. I just need a bit more practice.

Hello Nivedita,

I differ from Ajith in saying that you don't need to work on Verbal. Yes you need to work on quants as well but increaaing score in verbal is more important.

My scores in 3 attempts were as follows:

580 - Q49, V28 (or something below 30 i don't remember)

690 - Q48, V35

720 - Q49, V40

You see what verbal can do to your score!

But yeah, he's absolutely correcr about the percentile thing.

And i guess 100 hours of study are enough for GMAT. Take extra 30 for 6 mock tests (4 hrs. Test and 1 hour review). Now its upto you how much time you can give to GMAT daily.
Increasing quants score is no big deal. Practice is the key. Manhattan guides are awesome. Try them.

Last but not the least, don't see the points you wanna increase. Just see what your target score demands, and how you wanna get there.

PM me if you need any resources.

Hope that helps.

A look at GMATPrep scores would also be useful. For all we know, you might actually be quite close to your target score. And from what I've read on GMAT Club, 48-49 on the GC tests is not easy to get.

To clarify, what I said was that the OP does not need Q50 or more or V40+ to cross 700. If nivedita88 just underperformed in quant, he or she might be very close to a 700 ability level right now, because the verbal score (34) is pretty good (and certainly for the first attempt). It's the quant that really dragged the overall down.

Nivedita,

One point is there any drastic difference between what you did on 11th October exam nd the mocks. Secondly do get your extended report as well for exam it will sort your issues. Thirdly hope you might have not committed too many mistakes in first 10 questions of any of the sections, it acts as a destroyer for sure.

I would also suggest to have a look at your error logs. Errors logs are good representation of nature of errors we commit and sometimes unfound areas as well.

Thanks a lot. In fact I have not given any tests till date. I'm just a beginner. I need help to know how to start but to start i need some prep /basic course which I don't have. (I don't have enough money to buy these right now). Where can i get used prep materials from the successful candidates who may not longer need it.

Also, since I'm targeting for Indian tier 1 B schools for executive MBA. I don't know wht scores did they accept this year.

You could take a look here and here. Try to get at least the official books, as they are full of actual (old) GMAT practice questions. Also, you could consider starting your own thread in the future. That will help you get better responses to your questions.
