These should be treated as formal business essays. A big part of being a good business person is judgement, knowing when to say what and when. So you will need to know how to balance being professional and polished with letting your personality shine through. You want to write professionally but also in a way that no one else could be the person writing the essay. Just use the typical rules of grammar while writing authentic and heart felt essays.

Thank you guys for the feedback. It is definitely not an issue with improper grammar or anything like that.

I'm coming from a non-traditional background (medical device start up) and I used the term "back-of-the-napkin sketch" which is what my wife was referencing. I personally didn't think it was that bad, but I'll probably work with someone to have it read in it entirety.
