Kellogg vs. MIT Sloan [#permalink] New post   24 Feb 2019, 12:44
Hi all,

I am very fortunate to have been admitted to both Kellogg and MIT Sloan. I am really on the fence about which school to accept. I have been to both admit days and was impressed by different things at both of the schools. Kellogg has a fantastic campus and appears to have an amazing student culture with a big focus on soft schools and developing leaders. Sloan appears more skills focused with more of focus on integration with the wider MIT campus.

Both schools are similarly ranked but MIT has a stronger brand presence (especially internationally).

A bit about myself
- International student looking to stay in the US after school
- In consulting right now and getting sponsorship
- Looking at getting into the media & entertainment (strategy) space after my time in consulting (currently specializing in that field in consulting)
- I am quite a social person and especially like that aspect about Kellogg
- I am really interesting in developing my interpersonal / soft skills at business school (I know Kellogg focuses on this but wondering if it is a 'weakness' at MIT)
- Undergraduate in engineering and business

Decision is due in about a week so getting down to the crunch time for me

Any insight or recommendations you can give would be incredibly helpful!

Hi! Congrats. Maybe I saw you over there as I also attended both admit weekends.

Anyway, if you want to remain in the US and know for sure you are able to stay there, I dont think brand matters that much, as both are very well regarded.

You mention soft skills, and from talking exhaustively with many people at both schools (also a concern of mine), I concluded that the “focus” you mention each school puts on that aspect actually comes from the student group and environment. I think it largely depends on each individual rather than on the school. And yes, MIT will provide you with ample opportunities to show and develop leadership and even take courses if that is what you expect.

I agree though that the social aspect is quite different, and you value an extroverted and social environment.

So all things being similar, I would say that for your case, Kellogg seems a better fit.

Congrats on getting into MIT and Kellogg! Within the M7, both schools are known to have the best MBA cultures (type of students and social life). Both have a very collaborative mindset, and are not HUGE programs (Sloan's program being the smallest in terms of class size).
As for media and entertainment, I believe MIT Sloan has the edge. Sloan leverages its relationship with the rest of MIT and of course the world renowned MIT Media Lab.
Sloan shares a handful of clubs with the Media Lab, they host tons of events together and share some faculty. The Media Lab building is pretty much within Sloan's campus, facilitating integration even more.
As for international status, MIT is MIT. If you are thinking of leaving the US in a few years, or go into a non typical MBA industry, MIT will have the edge here.
Therefore, I'd personally go with MIT in your position. Then again, they are both amazing schools, so there is no wrong answer.

I need to clear up any confusion here: the media lab at MIT is very cool but NOT about corporate strategy in the entertainment industry https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIT_Media_Lab

DEFINITELY GO WITH KELLOGG for that focus; they are #1 in terms of marketing. Chicago is an advertising hub.
