If 2 couples and one other date left, there are 8 people left with their original date

Answer is (B)

Official Explanation



In this socially awkward situation, guests are possibly leaving without their dates, and vice versa. We have 22 people total, and 5 people leave, so we have 17 people remaining. Since the date-guest groups are pairs, 8 guests maximum still have their date, with a stray person left who may be a guest or a date. That's the rosiest possible situation, as the question is asking for.

The correct answer is (B).

Solution


Given:
    • At a wedding reception, each of 11 guests brought a different individual as a date

To find:
    • If 5 people leave the reception early, what is the greatest possible number of guests remaining with their original dates

Approach and Working Out:
    • So, the total number of guests = 11 * 2 = 22
    • If 5 leave, then the number of guests at the reception will be 22 – 5 = 17

Thus, greatest possible number of guests remaining with their original dates = the quotient when 17 is divided by 2 = 8

Hence, the correct answer is Option B.

If 5 people leave, then 2 pairs of dates and 1 without his or her date could have left.

Thus, the greatest number left with their dates is 11 - (2 + 1) = 8.

Answer: B

Since there are 11 pairs, 22 people are present the in room. The other piece of info we're given is that 5 people go home early leaving us with 17 people.

We now quickly try out all the options to see the maximum no.of pairs left:

A. 9 pairs = 18 people, not possible since we're told in the prompt that 17 people stay back
B. 8 pairs = 16 people, this works as 1 person is now by him/herself

We stop at B as we're asked for the max. number of couples that are left and 8 is larger than the C, D and E.
