As vs Like
Like is a Preposition and mostly used for comparison "Similar to". When comparing nouns use of "Like" is recommended.
As is a conjunction and should be followed by a clause.

A. Like the works of an operatic genius or a master painter, - Incorrect
This statement compare works of an operatic genius to a great sportsman, this is comparison error.

B. Like that of an operatic genius or a master painter, - Incorrect
This statement compare works of an operatic genius to a great sportsman, this is comparison error.

C. Like the performance of an operatic genius or a master painter - Incorrect
Same error as above - comparison error.

D. As is the case of an operatic genius or a master painter, - Incorrect
As is used for verbs and not nouns, we need 'Like' here

E. Like an operatic genius or a master painter,correct
This statement correctly compares operatic genius or a master painter to the sportsman.
