Re: A Computer chip supplier charges $4 per chip plus a one-time $50 payme [#permalink]

A Computer chip supplier charges $4 per chip plus a one-time $50 payment and requires 11 days for production, handling and delivery time. In case of urgent requests, the supplier demands an additional $50 payment and a surcharge of $2 per chip per day for each day less than the standard 11 days. A dealership orders 50 chips 2 days prior to his desired pickup date, by what percent this urgent request is greater than a regular order?

(A) 160%

(B) 200%

Hi. Please tell me where did I go wrong

Normal situation: $4/chip + $50 FOR 11 days
Urgent situation: $4+$2 (additional surcharge for each day <11 days)/day + $100 ($ 50 under regular condition + $50 as additional payment)

According to question -
Normal situation: $200 ($4x50 chips) + $50 = $250

Since it requires 2 days before standard 11 days, hence
For 1 day before standard 11 days charge - $4 + $2 = $6
For 2 days before standard 11 days charge - $4 + $4 = $8

Urgent situation: $8x50 + $100 = $500

Urgent request greater than regular order by = ($500-$250)/ $ 250x 100 = 100%

Dear all, please note that the whole trick is in paraphrasing of the question "A dealership orders 50 chips 2 days prior to his desired pickup date" in other words, he needs to pick his order in 2 days only so the extra fees will be calculated based on 11-2= 9 days.

9 days x 2$ per chip per day = $18 extra fees in addition to 4 regular fees = $22 per chip + $50 one-time charges + $50 extra charges so total of
Urgent order = 50 chips x $22 = $1100 + $100 ($50 + $50) = 1200
Regular order = 50 chips x $4 + $50 one-time payment = $250

Then finally, to calculate how much the urgent order is higher than the regular one (1200-250)/250 *100 = 380.
