Re: Mr. and Mrs. Lopez have two children. When they get into their family [#permalink]
Archit3110, Bunuel My question is same as asked by arvind42:

How do we understand whether children are distinguishable and whether the placement in the back seats matter (whether back left seat is different from back right seat)

Can you please explain?

consider two cases,
case 1: - Mr is in driver's seat. so 3 seats can be occupied by remaining 3 people in 3! ways = 6
case 2: Mrs is in driver's seat. so again 3 seats can be occupied by remaining 3 people in 3! ways = 6

total = 12

Approach:

Number of ways to select the driver(Mr. or Mrs. Lopez): 2C1 = 2
Number of ways to select other 3 seats' passengers: 3! = 6

Total number of ways: 2*6 = 12

Mr. and Mrs. Lopez have two children. When they get into their family car, two people sit in the front, and the other two sit in the back. Either Mr. Lopez or Mrs. Lopez must sit in the driver's seat. How many seating arrangements are possible?

(A) 4
(B) 12
(C) 16
(D) 24
(E) 48

We have two options for the driver’s seat and then 3! = 6 options for the remaining 3 seats, for a total of 12 options.

Answer: B
