First off, all the very best to all those R1ers waiting on their call! I know the wait is the most difficult part of the process - hope ALL of us hear some good news from our R1 schools !

A few queries -

The word limit is rather stated 'strongly' for all the essays. Did you guys absolutely stick to it??

Essay Q3 - How do I interpret this question? Can I put forth a case assuming that I would have done something different right from the begining or just my alternate plans starting from my present position?

Thanks in advance!

I did not strictly stick to the word limit. I had a +20% in 1 of my essays. (I guess its not a good idea). Try to avoid it if you can. Others were exact.

Q3. My strategy was more of an alternate interest of mine. I was quite confused about that question as well. But I finally went with an extra curricular activity that I am pursuing and how that will help me solve multi-disciplinary problems in B School.

Thanks Robin, but dont they ask for an alternate profession? I was thinking of bringing in my EC as well ..but the wording of the question makes me think ..

I felt the focus of the essay was on how I an interest I have can help me contribute to the classroom. I didn't have an alternate career (which I was pursuing actively outside my work). If I just had a dream of being an astronaut it will not really help me add value to the classroom, if I didn't pursue it.

What I feel is that. If you have been actively pursuing another career outside of your current work (e.g. as a part time tutor, coz u love teaching students) then talk about it briefly (what you have done about this interest of your) and then talk in detail about how this experience of yours can help you in a bschool (solve muti disciplinary problems) - like leadership, communication skills, team work, etc. If you do not have an alternate career interest that you have been pursuing actively then talk about an extra curricular activity (e.g. Soccer - that's what I talked about).

I feel it doesn't really matter what the activity is, as long as you can show how it will help you in the future. Extra points if you can even touch how it will help you with your career goals.

This is my take on this question.

I just started filling-out the online application form. And I like it so much!! it is so short and to the point, without crap questions that other schools have. Overall I like the recommender's questions and the essay questions of Ross (except for one of the essays).

I wrote about a hypothetical alternate profession- not something that I actively seek to pursue. This profession was built off my extra curricular activities.

Also, I did stick to the word limits- maybe exceeded by < 5% but not more than that.

dosa, I have options for either on-campus or phone interviews. I still haven't decided. I will probably go to campus.
