Hi All,
I'm in a real dilemma. I gave me GMAT in Aug end and scored a 730 after scoring consistently in the 770-780 range in the preps. I know what went wrong, i couldn't sleep the night before, had a 9 a.m appointment and was super sleepy during the exam. I was devastated then and decided to retake my GMAT 31 days later.
But, now with all the pressure of applications, i am not sure if i can take out time to study for the exam. I know i don't need too much preparation but i am confused, if it is really worth it?
I am an engineer from Delhi University and obviously my percentage looks bad on a 0-100 scale.(the highest is 75)

Really need some advise :
1) How much will the GMAT improve my chances in HBS, Stanford etc.
2) Should i postpone my application to the 2nd round to submit a better score?

Would appreciate any help.

To answers to your 2nd question,

Your present 730 itself a good score to get an admission in HBS or stanford provided you have good profile for the score. I am not really sure whether another 40/50 score will confirm your admission to these, as GMAT score is not the only determinant of admission. Again the profile matters, But if you have good GMAT score with good profile, it will be really an advantage for you to get the admission.

Take a look at this thread: should-i-retake-gmat-thread-retaking-gmat-strategies-83339.html, esp the links to the admitted/rejected profiles.
Most will probably agree that a better use of time will be to work on your applications.

Thanks for your advice.
I actually did go through the link, and it did indeed help me take a decision. I'm not giving it again and applying in the first round !
Going through the profiles made me realize that a 770 will not ensure an interview call as i was assuming.

I've been a latent member of GC for a while now, trying out the tests, testing the iPhone app and GC has again helped me immensely. Thanks a lot.

Yep - as surprising as it sounds. i think some schools got burnt by introverted 750+ scorers who would live in their shells but would not contribute much to the discussions in the class or add value to the program and end up unemployed at the end as they were not aggressive enough. A very high GMAT score may be a red flag to check your leadership skills - you may be a great PhD material with 770 but without a strong personality/leadership potential (purpose of an MBA) that's not a great match for MBA programs.

The only value I see from an ultra high score is that score hungry 3rd tier programs would love to buy your score with rich scholarships.
